Malta for people who don't like beach holiday?

We are thinking of going to Malta next summer. I went in my teens and loved it and DH and I are both history nerds buffs, so there should be plenty to do.

But I'm having trouble deciding where to stay.

When we've travelled before, we've done self-catering cottages etc, or hotels with interconnecting rooms. (Although I do prefer some catering facilities as DD2 has good allergies). We don't spend a lot of time there as we do a lot of day trips etc. We know this works for us.

But. DC are getting to the age now that they might like access to a kids club or some entertainment and a pool. And a more relaxing holiday might be nice. But DH who is a grumpy sod would hate a big noisy hotel/pool complex. I just need a shady spot to read my book in between dips in the pool and exploring the area. We're antisocial introverts, so don't need entertainment in the evenings for adults or anything.

So, essentially. Quiet, relatively small hotel complex with access to kids activities and a pool. Preferably with a kitchenette. Definitely not in a party area (see above about DH being a grumpy sod - he gets even grumpier if he doesn't sleep).

Is it even possible?

(I suppose the ideal would be a villa next to a small hotel where we could use the facilities)

We are in Malta right now (30 degrees on Wednesday!) ... not with kids but PM me for the name of our hotel (largish, pretty good value) which looks fairly good for kids.

However, it does sound like what you need is self catering really? Small hotels wont have much for children, large ones are not for your DH.

Yes, self catering would probably be the best option - but it doesn't give anything for the kids to do other than hang about with us (we have two very sociable outgoing kids, not sure how that happened!).

I could tell DH he'd just have to put up with a bigger complex, but he'd end up being miserable (and I probably wouldn't like it much either)

Malta is great... I love it (although I know some people don't) and the people are so nice. Not done it with littlies - they've long flown the nest - and its not good for beaches... Having said that, we are in Mellieha Bay which has a small beach - and were at Golden Sands yesterday which has a lovely beach. We are here for the history and archaeology really - L'Mdina is just beautiful.

Have you cconsidered Greece?
