We're in a really odd position of suddenly having ?1000 to go on holiday with. We've had a really difficult year which started with a flood, subsequent repairs, has included anti depressants, ill relatives and then DH was made redundant. The stroke of luck is that DH then walked into a new job almost straight away and so we've decided to splash out on a holiday. We haven't been abroad for five years.
But where to go???? I'm baffled!!! We want a nice villa / self catering place in a pleasant village with a quiet beach and lots of day trips / culture / interesting places to visit, with one 5yr old. Anywhere in Europe. I need some recommendations. Anyone???

Turkey.
I live there.

Majorca
Greece
Morocco (bloody cheap now the budget airlines do it)

The south of Italy is really cheap and child friendly and full of lovely villages near the beach.

JinglePrunes · 03/12/2006 21:56

My BIL is always trying to get us to go to Sardinia.

(I can't personally recommend any beach-type places as dh 'doesn't do beaches' - grrr)

All countries I like the sound of, but where to start? Greece confuses me because there are so many islands and we really want interesting places to visit. I know there's a lot of history in Greece (!!!) but knowing my luck, we'll end up on the 18-30 island with nothing to look at.

Carmenere - is there an area in Southern Italy you'd recommend?

The Chania area of Crete is lovely and there is plenty to see there, Chania town is fab and the Samaria Gorge is amazing and there are lots of ruins there too but I diddn't get round to seeing them.

I was in an area around Tropea in Calabria, Stunning, it's lovely.

Borrow a guide book from your library and flick through it until you find somewhere you like the look of.
Then start your research proper.

Sensible as ever moondog. Bit like a kid in a sweetshop at the moment...

Also worth checking our Lastminute.com for breaks in January and to get an idea of what floats your boat.

PeachesMcLean · 03/12/2006 23:24

That's the other problem! I'm overwhelmed by the websites but have this idea I want to book online and get our own flights and accomodation. Must decide where we want to go though, and then start faffing around with t'internet.
Sorry, I can't believe I'm calling a holiday abroad and a good budget a "problem".... must get a grip.

South of France
Tuscany

I'm looking at going to Sicily at Easter and there is lots to do there (even a real live volcano!). Around Taormina is meant to be nice (though I am not talking from personal experience... only from browsing websites). Lovely sea and you can still get to Etna from there and even possibly a day-trip to Palermo.

If you want more 'culture' in Italy then I would recommend Tuscany. You could stay in the countryside, but visit Florence (to be avoided in July/August - it's hotter than hell and there are no Florentines there, only tourists - but fab the rest of the year) and also Siena (gorgeous), Pisa (leaning tower bound to be a hit with any 5-y-o, surely?), etc. If you want a beach, you can stay on the coast near Pisa. Haven't stayed there, but Castiglione della Pescaia is a lovely place.

I also like the North-East. Had a nice (but very quiet - no-one there!) holiday in Friuli last Easter. But if you want more going on, you could stay within reach of Venice (I wouldn't say in Venice as it's so expensive) somewhere where there are other things to do... I like the area around Bassano del Grappa, for example. Lake Garda is also gorgeous. And you could easily work in a day-trip to Venice from either of those. Not on a beach though. Places like Lido di Jesolo seem a bit built-up and touristy to me, though again I haven't actually stayed there, so might be doing them a disservice.

My final suggestion would be the southern tip of Puglia. Haven't been there since I was a student, but very beautiful. Very uncrowded. Also very beautiful old towns, like Gallipoli.

Have fun. Sounds like you all deserve a break.

Wow, villa looks gorgeous. Will be saving that one for future reference....
Got lots of research to do now. Having said that, am starting to feel guilty about spending such a huge amount on a holiday - especially having read some of the other posters on MN who are wondering how to make ends meet for Christmas.
So will be checking things out carefully, but very much appreciating the suggestions - Italy or France are the way to go I think.
