Thailand - Spending Money

We're taking our honeymoon in Feb next year, doing 3 days in Cambodia, 3 days in Bangkok, then 5 days in Phuket.

We have Cambodia already planned and paid for, and have a few things already planned, booked and paid for once in Thailand, but they don't include meals/drinks, and most are half days so the rest of the day will be our own to explore and do as we wish.

Have you been to Thailand?... Is it expensive? How much spending money would you recommend taking for 8 days? we've never been and have no idea how much to save!

obviously you don't take spending money beyond an initial 'float' - you tell your bank where you are going and use ATMs.

eating local in Thailand is cheap. Drinks are not. Forget buying clothes unless you are size 10 or less.

does depend where on Phuket island you are though; Phuket town has lots of lovely cheap restaurants. The resorts may have fewer. Haven't been to Bangkok but I can't imagine you'll struggle for cheap food there!

remember jabs, tabs and insect repellent.

Thailand is pretty cheap and as special says - use ATMs. We have a union pay card and could take money out at virtually every bank. Charge was 50 baht per transaction. The food courts in shopping centres in Bangkok are good value and so are the market areas which appear after dark.
You can use the sky train to travel around Bangkok - which is good value and the traffic is horrendous. Taxi to the airport from the centre is about 400 baht.
I have been to the north of Phuket and it's much cheaper to eat outside the resort - lots of little restaurants on the beach.

Eat where the locals do - cheap and delicious! Drinks can be very expensive as is everything in the fancy hotels! We got a great deal at a lovely hotel but didn't eat or drink there and used the local nearby places instead as the hotel bar and restaurant were £££££. Check out where you will be staying in Phucket on trip advisor to pick up tips from others. It is an amazing place and I would love to go back one day.

important aside; it is pronounced 'poo-ket'. Smile

Some great advice - thanks! We like to explore and were planning on eating where the locals do.

And thanks, I know its 'Poo-ket'
Im glad you say that because my DH argued with me saying its pronounced 'Fu-ket'... until one of his friends who spent time living in Thailand said "actually mate, shes right"... love it when that happens!

if he does want a good childish snigger (and who doesn't?) take him to Whakapapa in New Zealand. Smile
