Rome, which area?

Can you help me choose an area of Rome, then I might stand some chance of booking an apartment. I am currently bashing my head against Airbnb and roman reference without much luck.

We're off to Rome in October with DD who is almost 9. I can't work out whether it's better to be right in the centre of town, but pay big money for the privilege, or be in a further out, less touristy neighbourhood and commute in? Any suggestions of where might suit us - particularly outer places with good transport links. DD has pretty good stamina and can walk reasonable distances, but I think we'll probably do enough of that seeing the sights.

DH and I stayed near the Trevi fountain in our pre-DD days, but don't know if that's the right thing to do now. And am more broke, anyway.

Or if you'd like to recommend an apartment, that would be even better...

I don't have anywhere to recommend, but you will find if you stay further out, that it will be a lot cheaper to eat out and experience a bit of Roman lifestyle. Rome is very spread out as it is so even in the centre, you'll be doing a fair bit of walking and travelling between sites.

This summer, I stayed in a hotel by termini, and I found it really useful to be there for hopping on buses and underground. I have disabled daughter, and we used lots of taxis, which got us between sites, the cost of them added together came in far less than the hop on hop off tourist bus!!

Trastavere and Testaccio are great places to stay - lots of good food etc but not right in the centre.

Termini is a good, close for the metro to visit centre and Vatican and definitely cheaper. You can easily walk to the colosseum and Roman forum from termini.

Thanks everyone, currently looking at a nice flat near Termini on AirBnB!

We stayed in Trastavere and walked to all the sights. They are no more than 2 or 3 miles away.

We've been to Rome twice, first time we stayed near Termini, last time we stayed near Campo D'Fiori. I much preferred the second location, as it was very easy to walk to all the main sites, but also an easy walk over the river to Trastevere in the evening.
