Thinking about a family day out to London at half term. Just had a look at the Trainline website and for some reason it said over £400+ for a family return ticket? Please tell me that's not right.

Might be easier to drive and find a park and ride.

I don't know London at all. Have been inside the capital twice, I think, in my life. And the first time was a school trip. Am clueless but am also on a little bit of a budget these days so can't afford to book the wrong tickets.

Isn't it against railway bylaws or some such thing? They can ask you to get off the train I think if they catch you doing this.

www.thetrainline.com/buytickets/combinedmatrix.aspx?Command=TimeTable#Journey/HALESWORTH/LONDON%20LIVERPOOL%20STREET/28/10/15/08/00/Dep/28/10/15/17/00/Dep/2/2

only £186 return doing both journeys in peak times, if you book it now. I've used the Wednesday I'm sure the other days wont be that different. Assume both DC are under 15 but over 5?

Ah, I'm pleased to read I'm wrong. www.splitticketing.com/Are_Split_Tickets_Legal.html

what, splitting the journey into 2 and buying 2 separate tickets? as long as the tickets are valid for the train you are on there is no problem at all doing this. The worst that can happen is you might need to swap seats if someone else has that seat booked for part of the journey. Heck, you could even get off the train at the midway station and walk down to the next carriage and get back on.

There's a website called tickety split which shows you if you buy tickets to split destinations instead of direct it can be cheaper (I guess cos different rail networks etc) so for example if you were travelling from London to Lincoln it could say but a ticket from London to Luton then Luton to Lincoln but just stay on one train you don't actually need to get on and off (just pretend you are I guess)

shoopshoopsong · 18/09/2015 22:09

Sorry hadn't seen there was a 2nd page of people saying the same idea

PHANTOMnamechanger · 18/09/2015 22:12

no you don't have to get on and off or even pretend to, the ONLY condition is that you COULD get on/off ie it has to be a train that stops at the midway station, not a straight through train. On some lines this means you have to be very careful about which one you book, because they do not all stop at every station.

£34.40, two adults, two children, travelling on a Wednesday at 1041 and returning on the 2000 train. If you want to get an earlier train, it's £48.75. That's with a family and friends railcard.

We always used to get a late train home with the kids, have an earlyish dinner somewhere near the station, and they will sleep on the train, it is less busy too.

Halesworth to London Liverpool Street 2 adults & 2 children £50. 10.41 to London, 2100 home, £43.40. That's using a railcard.

rosy71 · 18/09/2015 22:31

Whoops, it's £43.40. I was rounding it up to £50 at first.

Oh my god you lot are bloody amazing! I slope off for a quick Fear The Walking Dead and you've done all the hard work for me. Grin

Those are some stonking savings.

I was hoping to go in half term week at the end of October, depending on when dh can blag some time off work. Are those cheap prices dependant on split tickets?

No, the prices I found would be a ticket all the way through. Change trains at Ipswich. I put in the Wednesday of October half-term. You would have to pay extra for the underground. I usually just go to our local railway station & buy advance tickets there once I've got an idea of the price. :)

PHANTOMnamechanger · 19/09/2015 09:57

One of the prices I found was about £90 return, with a scheduled change in Ipswich (not split ticket) but will depend exactly what day and what time you want to travel.

I really don't know where you were looking to find a price £400ish originally - I even looked to see if you had got prices for Liverpool in error but even that is way under £400!

Bear in mind many of these offers have very limited numbers of seats to buy in advance at those cheap prices, so hurry up and decide and book ;)

I will do, thanks. Smile

If you do get a railcard there is a discount on that too - family10 for 10% off
