We stayed in the Diplomat which was out of the main city centre, but still on the underground line. It was a bit of a business hotel, but the staff were excellent, breakfast was lovely and there is a jacuzzi on the top floor with spectacular city views! Think it was about £50 a night, but that was a few years ago before they went over to the euro, which will no doubt have made things more epensive!

Have a lovely time - the city is beautiful, but very cold in the winter, oh, and be careful to buy the correct ticket on the tube - the guards seem to check the tourists tickets more as they'll obviously make more mistakes when using the ticket machines! Great place though!

We stayed at the Bishops House, just beyond Charles Bridge in the Mala Strana. We enjoyed our stay, though there are mixed reviews on the Trip Advisor Website.

I was thinking in the city centre as heard you can walk everywhere.

But is it easy to use underground and trams? Maybe a little out of the centre would be cheaper??

Will be a 3 night childfree trip - what would you say are the 'must see' places??

Undergroud is easy to use - think there were only 3 lines!

Go see Charles Bridge, the cathedral and take a trip up the tv tower - great views of the city and there's a restaurant at the top! Also it's out of the city so you get to see a more 'untouristy' prague. There's a lovely medieval clock in the old square which had a Xmas market when we went in November. Wenceleslas Square is in all the guide books, but we didn't rate it much - too much for the tourists and a bit tacky (but that's just our opinion!)

The people were really friendly and it was very cheap, but I hear prices have gone up with them joining the EU and going over to the Euro.

Enjoy!

Thanks Pop will keep up the research.

Did you do any of the free guided walks that guides employed by the city conduct?

No we didn't do any guided walks, just walked around on our own - it's a good size city to get around on foot, but take comfy shoes!!! I think we did do the guided bus thing though where you hop on and off where ever you like!

Oooh i am going with my young man from 31st dec -5th jan, so will get nye and my 40th to celebrate while over there.

we have got a one bedroom apartment in the centre of prague, considered the duo, but decided what we would spend travelling might as well go towards being more central

i can't wait to go!!

we are likely to be out v late tho, what time does the public transport end?

also we figured it would be better to be able to stagger home on new years morning

MrsSpoon · 28/11/2006 19:25

We stayed here for our 10th wedding anniversary. It was lovely, didn't use the facilities which looking back was very silly but it was our first trip away without the kids so did loads and loads of sleeping.

MrsSpoon · 28/11/2006 19:27

I echo the comfy shoes. I had comfy shoes during the day but at night wore heels, we couldn't work the trams out so walked everywhere and most nights was just about crying in pain by the time we made it back to the hotel (I'm not a big wearer of high heels in general so not used to it).
