Hi,

I will be in Italy week before Christmas and was thinking of taking DS^s to Rome.

Does Rome get decorated for xmas, are there fairs like Germany, shop windows decorated, lights etc.?

It was yonks ago now (over 10 years!) But I was in Rome the week before christmas, and was v. suprised at the lack of fairy lights, etc, and there certainly was no sign of any Christmas markets.
This info is pretty out of date now, so hopefully someone will be along with something more useful

I was also in Rome at Christmas time (about 15 years ago!) and I don't remember any markets etc but had a huge lifesize crib and massive Christmas tree in St Peter's Square whichas pretty spectacular.

there is a big christmas market at the piazza navona... it sells lovely nougat and ornaments for cribs and things. i bought loads of wacky little crates of fish and baskets of oranges for my mum's crib at home. they are hilarious (and probably all made in china).
st peter's is also good but mostly the italians race about in padded jackets complaining about the weather (which is still really nice compared to here). they celebrate christmas with presents on the 6th, so i don't think they get going quite as early on it as we do.
love rome in winter though, few tourists and it's all dark and the monuments are lit up. who am i kidding, i love rome at any time of the year...

I went for Christmas. I don't remember all the tat we get, but there were lovely Christmas trees outside the churches and everyone was buying poinsettias and fish for xmas dinner. It really didn't seem commercial and overblown like here. It wasn't warm, but lovely and sunny and plenty of restaurants open and lots of tourists wandering abput.

DD and I are going for Christmas but not sure if we will be spending any time in Rome. I'm hoping we may have a few hours there on our last day before we fly home. I've been there at New Year too but can't say I noticed any decorations. Probably too busy looking at the Italian men .

Have a wonderful time.
