Bumping. Was keeping an eye on this myself as I am also planning next year's trip. So far am thinking 1 week in tuscany in old farm type place with swimming pool and then 1 week on Ligurian coast near Portofino, called Santa Margherita di Liguri. Have 2 children, aged 7 and 3 so want to visit some interesting places for us but also nice things to do for them. Nothing booked yet so any opinions also welcome.

I did read on here a while ago a netter who said she owned a clothes shop in Lucca so sure there must be somebody who can help!!!

My suggestion would be Tuscany or possibly Umbria. Villas with pools so you could combine s bit of culture with the pool to keep little ones happy.
the area near Florence ( between Flo and Siena is nice but a bit overflowing with Brits and germans now) here you are nearer to sites e.g San Gimignano, Chiantishire and some lovely small hill top villages. My favourite area is Montepulciano on the border between Tuscany and Umbria a bit of a trek to get to fly to Rome or Pisa but easy access when you get there to Perugia, Assisi, you can train to florence, plus there are lovely little day / half day trips to places like Montalcino,Pienza and a few more. Only thing about villas is that few are within walking distances of places to eat so you need to buy the wine to take back to teh villa and not drive ..or watch the sun set over the hills.
Helennn only thing I woudl say about Ligurain coast is that if you go in August watch out for beach charges as they will be high and your children will have to dig castles in the area by the sea as the sun beds / umbrellas are so cramped in.
Another idea would be Northern Sardinia but again I would avoid this in August .
