Week in a caravan in Borth - in the rain

We (2 adults, 5 kids - 2 families) are staying in a caravan in Borth for a week next week. It looks like it might rain. HELP!

What can we do to keep the kids entertained (range in age from 6 to 16) that isn't to ££££££ and doesn't involve having to dry masses of clothes every day.

Is that 2 families in the one caravan? Are the parents related? Like is it you and your sister?
Or have you been mad brave enough to attempt this with a friend?
How old are the kids?

Anyway - if you haven't already got it, get Uno - it's a card game, a simplified version of Switch, that's really easy to learn even by young ones, fun to play, and can be rather absorbing. They can partake in little tournaments. We take Uno on camping trips for rainy days (plentiful) and honestly the kids thoroughly enjoy it.

We also have draughts, chess, Bananagrams and two decks of playing cards.
Don't bother with Monopoly...it takes far too long and let's face it, it's boring and causes fights.

We are sisters - getting on will be fine!

I think we're fine with entertainment in the caravan - but we cannot do that all week! The kids will need to burn off energy. Mine would be fine hiking etc, but the others less so.

Go to visit the Animalarium - it might be small but it's still good. Or a trip into Aberystwyth - plenty to do there Smile

margaritasbythesea · 18/08/2015 08:34

Do you have a car?

If so there are soft play centres nearby at Llandre and Ffos y Ffin nearby, a swjmming pool and soft play fo smaller ones at Clarach.

There is a petting barn which has soft play and lots of outdoor things at Llanrhystud called Fantasy Farm.

There is a place called King Arthur's labyrinth by Machynlleth that you can get to by train and bus I think. It is underground caves.

Of course you do have to pay for all those. I will have another think. Struggling a little with the age range.

Aberystwyth museum is surprisingly nice....

So take yours hiking and leave the offer open for the others to join you? Don't not do what you want, because they won't.

margaritasbythesea · 18/08/2015 08:36

There is a ping pong cafe in Aberystwyth called Wiff Waff. Fun for older ones?

margaritasbythesea · 18/08/2015 08:38

Lots and lots to do outdoorsy wise.

Walk up Constitution Hill in Aberystwyth is an easy one. There is a little funicular too and a cafe at the top.

I agree - take waterproofs and hike for a couple of days regardless of what the other family think. The weather forecast isn't for constant driving rain so obviously hit the beach every chance you get whenever you start to see a glimpse of sun.

tbtc · 18/08/2015 08:45

Thanks all....keep them coming.

We can take the 16 yo out of the equation really - he can entertain himself. Of course it would be lovely to do stuff all together but if we end up having to take the 4 younger ones on a day trip which doesn't suit him, he'll be fine. He'll have his bike blots all thoughts of teenage sopping wet bike kit hanging around in caravan all week

Take a hair-dryer...you will tank me for this tip. Dead good for finishing off damp coats and wellies and so on.

paidadarllenhwncont · 18/08/2015 08:53

These are both on the same site, and make a nice family day out, not too far away (half an hour?) from Borth

pictish There may well be a day where we decide to do our own thing, but I hope not. We are there to be together. Hiking not ruled out of course, but not every day!

Did I say every day? You mentioned hiking and I replied to the affirmative.

Besides, you might find you're actually glad of a bit of breathing space after a few days in a caravan with six other people. Wink

pic Sorry - that was snippy of me.

S' okay. I shouldn't have been negative about your upcoming holiday - trust me, we do soggy UK holidays too. I'm just a prickly pear that doesn't share intimate space well.

Aberystwyth has:
The cliff railway with camera obscura at the top. You can walk back down.
Little steam railway to Devil's bridge
Swimming pool
Museum
Harbour
You could travel to the farm mentioned above.
If you fancy travelling a bit further, New Quay is nice & you can go on a dolphin spotting boar trip.
Alternative Technology Centre & King Arthur's Labyrinth at Machynlleth.

rosy71 · 21/08/2015 19:45

That should say boat trip!

Limer · 21/08/2015 19:48

Catch the train to Aberystwyth, and walk back along the coast path. Spectacular views and you can spot dolphins.

Limer · 21/08/2015 19:51

Which site are you on? Brynowen, Cambrian coast or searivers?

tbtc20 · 22/08/2015 07:44

Limer
We are staying at a small caravan park. None of the ones you mention.

tbtc20 · 22/08/2015 07:45

Thank you so much everyone.
We have a good list of things to do.
We are off today!

Limer · 22/08/2015 07:55

The best beach is up at Ynyslas, 2 miles north of Borth, £1 to park at this time of year I think. Aberdyfi is across the estuary. Walk over the sand dunes to the coast, loads of space for kite-flying, games, digging sandcastles etc. If the tide's coming in and the waves are good, the kids will love body-boarding.

Couldashouldawoulda · 22/08/2015 08:33

You could also drive up to Portmeirion and look round. RSPB reserve nearby. Great plays at Aber arts centre (Legally Blonde is excellent at the moment, I hear!).

Savagebeauty · 22/08/2015 08:38

Talyllyn Railway at Tywyn...there is a fantastic railway museum and cafe there.
Aberdyfi is gorgeous..my favourite place.
Trefeddian hotel there is open to non residents for coffee etc.
