Dorset steam fair - worth it?

We will be on holiday in Weymouth when the Dorset Steam Fair is on.

Is it worth going to? Will my 1yo, 4yo and 7yo dds enjoy it?

I've seen there is just an evening ticket - what sorts of things happen in the evenings?

Yes, we went every year as children!

They light up the steam engines, and there is a fair, and beer and can can dancing

Lots of fun, but I would go all day

BeautifulBatman · 06/08/2015 15:29

Yes, it's fab. Plenty to do and see for the whole day.

Effjay · 06/08/2015 15:35

Been a few times. It's an amazing spectacle. Go!

Shosha1 · 06/08/2015 15:38

Just expect to get stuck in traffic and take ages to get into the site.

( grumble grumble lived the other side of the site from where I worked. Took bloody forever to get to work)

ExitPursuedByABear · 06/08/2015 15:38

Not been to the evening but went a couple of years ago when DD was 12 ish. Lots to see and do, but DD and I mainly ogled the horses whilst DH looked at enjins.

DH and I are off the Driffield Vintage Rally this weekend. I can barely contain my excitement. Hmm

ExitPursuedByABear · 06/08/2015 15:38

Oh yes, meant to mention the traffic. Took us jeffing ages to get there.

PlayingHouse · 06/08/2015 15:44

How much do the rides cost for the DC is it expensive?

Are there fireworks?

Exit, lucky you :o
DH has an old tractor and we've spent many weekends at steam rallies.
Dorset was always the one that dh we looked forward to most. So much to see and the evenings were brilliant, all the steam engines lined up and lit up.

ExitPursuedByABear · 06/08/2015 15:58

I've googled the Driffield one.

There are no animals.

Sad
ExitPursuedByABear · 06/08/2015 16:00

I wouldn't mind if I could actually drive a steam engine.

WhirlpoolGalaxyM51 · 06/08/2015 16:02

Would anyone recommend staying and camping, the whole bit?

I used to drive past it all the time and always liked the look of it, now the kids are 6 and 8 we could take them and camp, what do people think? Is there stuff for kids to do?

LeChien · 06/08/2015 16:04

Exit, last time I was there there were some heavy horses ploughing and a rare breeds tent, although it was a few years ago now....
Go to Lincoln steam fair, they have ladies steam engine races, I won because the other engine had a salmon cooking in the firebox and the owner wouldn't go fast!

LeChien · 06/08/2015 16:06

Whirlpool, we used to stay as dh had a lorry that he transported the tractor in, there's plenty to see and do to keep you occupied the whole time. Think of it as a festival but with steam engines instead of music, although The Wurzels sing there sometimes!

WhirlpoolGalaxyM51 · 06/08/2015 16:09

I need to make a list of things we should do LeChien and I am going to put that on!

ExitPursuedByABear · 06/08/2015 16:47

I'm liking the notion of cooking the salmon Grin
