15KG baggage panic!!!

freesiasaresweet · 06/08/2015 10:43

Help! Not flown for a few years, we are used to loading the car up to the max and getting on a ferry. is 15kg x4 enough for my family of 4 for one week in Spain? I bought a luggage scale and it is either faulty or I have gone way over with only a bare minimum mock up case load!! I already plan to buy shampoo etc when we get there so can't see how I can cut back. Advice please!

We used those ones branded 'world lightest suitcase' and took 4 for 4 of us

Tutt · 06/08/2015 11:30

You can't combine weight as in 2 x 30 instead of 4 x 15, it has to be as stated on the ticket.

Most airlines do let you pool luggage allowances (ours did) but it did specify not to have any one bag heavier than 23kg. Check what yours specifies before you pack anything else

freesiasaresweet · 06/08/2015 11:32

Blush ok so I read the lbs scale and am a fool but I blame my DH cos he has gone to work with my reading glasses!! It's only 11 kg!! Whoo hoo I am actually a light packer!Smile

OP posts:
dementedpixie · 06/08/2015 11:34

I didn't think you had packed very much. I take much more than you said you had packed

freesiasaresweet · 06/08/2015 11:35

No one case can be more than 30kg with Thomas Cook.

pixie I am feeling so smug I might just throw everything in with gay abandon and let the others fend for themselves! Star for Mummy!

OP posts:
dementedpixie · 06/08/2015 11:39

Fill it up before anyone else gets a chance!!

verystressedmum · 06/08/2015 11:39

When you say you're combining do you mean one case will weigh 30kg? If so definitely check with the airline if this is allowed. Our luggage allowance is 20kg each so between the 5 of us that's 100kg, but we couldn't bring 2 cases weighing 50kg each.

Nonnainglese · 06/08/2015 11:40

Check if airline will allow shared luggage, not all of them do.
Buy sunlo, toiletries in duty free and ditch or leave behind.
I managed a week with hand luggage only, 10kg weight limit and didn't wear 50% of stuff.

It was probably half of freesia's list Grin, and stayed 5* hotel full board, so it can be done!

verystressedmum · 06/08/2015 11:42

If we want one case to be heavier than our allowed 20kg we have to pay for extra luggage allowance or we'll be heavily charged at the airport.

MyPelvicFloorTrainsItself · 06/08/2015 11:42

That's something I would do Grin

freesiasaresweet · 06/08/2015 11:44

Thanks so much twolefttoes I am such a dope!

Op said Thomas Cook allows 30kg for any one case and that's what the website says too

dementedpixie · 06/08/2015 11:49

From Thomas Cook website:

If you're travelling with more than one person, you can combine your baggage allowance together as long as any one case does not exceed 30kgs in weight (for lifting purposes). There are no size restrictions on checked-in baggage.

freesiasaresweet · 06/08/2015 11:49

pixie Are you checking for me because I already made one epic fail? Lol! Can you come round and organise my holiday? Cheers.Wink

OP posts:
dementedpixie · 06/08/2015 11:51

No I checked because others were questioning it Grin. I had enough with packing for our 2 week holiday and am still recovering from it

dementedpixie · 06/08/2015 11:53

Make a list!! Unfortunately we normally leave something off the list so it doesn't get packed. Last year we forgot the toothbrush chargers...oops

freesiasaresweet · 06/08/2015 11:54

Wish me luck, I am off to the bedroom to start the dreaded pack. I may be gone for some time. Will get DC to read scalesConfused Thanks for your help all!

We go for 2 weeks. Never checked in a case.
Hand luggage only and if you cannot fit in case then think outside the box or leave behind.
Straighters I have a babylis set, and because you can have different attachments come apart. I have travelled with them in my jacket pocket. Same with camera, phone and ereader.
Toiletries I buy from supermarket near accommodation.

Heaviest clothes we wear, including the jacket/hoody.

Then for 2 weeks - 3 swimsuits. Couple of vest tops. Couple of shorts. Have some towels from a company called bodhi, that also work as a sarong, folds extremely small. One more thing for the evening in addition to what was worn. Pair of light sandals.

First time we took loads of stuff. None of it got worn, too hot lol. Stuff dries incredibly quick.

Teens they had trackies on to travel and underneath shorts and vest top, so landed and they stripped. Then again a couple of things to swim in and shorts and vest tops. Another time one of the dd's wore a
Maxi dress with a vest top underneath and fashioned a belt from another dress (she wanted to take loads and couldn't decide what to take

Youngest, again shorts and tshirts. Although he had most, but smaller
So fit easily.

Oh and of course we all had underwear. They also had in their pockets mobiles, Ebooks and ds/psp. We wear hats and sunglasses.

We are the family airlines hate Grin

bloodyteenagers · 06/08/2015 12:09

Oh and toothbrushes. Manual. No chargers. Less weight and a trial size toothpaste - aside from that everything is bought there, just like to get rid of fuzz mouth asap.

Twolefttoes · 06/08/2015 16:11

My pleasure, I did exactly the same thing, may have also thrown the suitcase and contents around the room a bit in frustration. My dm pointed out that I could have read the scales wrong, had to eat humble pie, after declaring myself not stupid Grin.

specialsubject · 06/08/2015 18:55

love it.

lbs not kg, everyone. OP is actually taking 11kg which is fine!

BTW baggage handlers are not superhuman. If you can't lift your case, they can't either. And they WILL lift it by one handle so if that breaks, too bad.

tunnockt3acake · 14/08/2015 23:16

some airlines are very strict if you are over weight by even half a kilo they will charge you for 5 or 10 kilos at high cost there & back

suggest wear all heavy clothes on plane shoes, coats, hoody

take mini toiletries or buy them at destination

pack 10kg, allows you to buy up to 5 kilos of new clothes or goodies on holiday

if you are going to hot place hand wash clothes there
