Aldeburgh, Suffolk, what do you think? Anyone been?

Am thinking of buying a flat to let out for holidays. Prices are high so it is very scary. Do you go to Aldeburgh? Have you been, what do you think? TIA.

My dh's godparents have a house close by and we often head down that way. It is lovely, some good pubs and restraunts, walks on the beach, the maltings, Waberswick is lovely too.

FrannyandZooey · 18/11/2006 08:50

Very nice indeed. Southwold and Walberswick are also beautiful, it is a very popular holiday destination around here (Essex).

Love Southwold too but house prices ridiculous and we can never find anywhere to eat with the kids in the evening.

Best Fish and Chips in the world!! I used to have to queue up for them whilst my parents went to the pub next door Can't wait til mine are old enough to do it.
Don't know about holidaying there though as family live locally. I love the Suffolk coast though. Good Luck, the house prices there are astonishing but if you do your homework I think it would work out.

SecondhandRose · 18/11/2006 19:44

Skyler, where would you suggest for lunch tomorrow with the kids? Do you think the chippy will be open?

Skyler · 18/11/2006 20:41

Hmm, it is off season so not sure I am afraid. Actually haven't eaten anywhere apart from the chippie sorry. My MIL rates Cafe 182 (?) but not sure how child friendly it is.....Sorry not much use really....

Had a weekend there earlier this year and want to go back again. Aldeburgh nice but Southwold better for kids as Aldeburgh only has a pebble beach IIRC.

EmmyLou · 18/11/2006 21:32

Aldeburgh is lovely, but agree that Southwold is more for families - we go for a week every year and pay twice as much for that one Southwold week than we do for two weeks in Pembrokeshire (the Southwold place does sleep 10 as opposed to 7 in Wales).

My uncle lives in Aldeburgh - they retired there which is perhaps an indicator of the slightly older demographic. But if you are thinking of buying a flat to let then I assume your target 'customers' might be more Aldeburgh music festival types not be families anyway?

Flat will be child friendly as it will have a big stairgate, cot etc and also has good size hall downstairs for buggies and bikes. Very few properties seem to have parking anyway so I figured it wouldn't matter too much if we didn't have parking.

Being only 2 bedrooms it will be cheaper to run and clean but obviously we'll get less in rentals but it has 2 double bedrooms and will have all mod cons so I'm hopeful we'll break even. I expect we'll get long weekenders in the winter.

You're right not to worry about the parking - in Southwold we have to park half a mile away after unloading. A logistical nightmare, but worth it in the end as have no real need for the car all week if the weather is good.

Golden Galleon Fish and Chips & Aldeburgh Fish & Chips Restaurant

These two fisah and chips shops, sell by far the best locally and a situated just down the high street from one another in Aldeburgh.

Opening hours :

Info below on fish and chips. We went for lunch at Easter and thoroughly enjoyed our meal - great for parents and children.

Lunch served noon-2pm Mon-Fri; noon-2.30pm Sat; noon-7pm Sun. Dinner served 5-8pm Mon-Wed; 5.30-8pm Fri, Sat Main courses £5.50-£7.50

Tel : 01728 454 685
Getting there :

Drive to Aldeburgh, past church and turn right in to the high street. The Golden Galleon is half way down the high street on the right hand side, with the main "famous" chip shop further down on the left hand side

Yum, yum fish and chips, sat on the beach in the sunshine today, just got back. Looked at the flat and we are def. going ahead with it. Very scary but at least we won't get flooded. Found lots of free parking just up some steps opposite.

Oh fantastic. How exciting. My parents went to Aldeburgh today to walk their dog. Said it was a beautiful day........wonder if you saw them lol. I want Fish and chips now. Mmmmm

binker · 19/11/2006 18:26

We love Southwold and Walberswick - have you thought of other nearby villages - Wenhaston or Westleton or Dunwich for example ?

SecondhandRose · 19/11/2006 20:07

Westleton too expensive, that's the problem really. Did see lots of dogs today, wasn't the little white one with half a black face was it? That's the only one I really remember!

We've decided we need to be right in town and the only two options are either Aldeburgh or Southwold and we can't afford Southwold. We can go downstairs from the flat and we are right in the centre of town and by the beach, ideal for the kids as they get older (DS is nearly 12).

Let you know when I'm doing rentals!

Skyler · 19/11/2006 20:44

No they have a big Laboradoodle called Bertie. Wishing you luck with your venture.

SecondhandRose · 20/11/2006 08:26

Yes! We did see him, he was by the boating lake and your parents were on a bench. We have a friend with more or less exactly the same dog and my DD said "look there's porridge". Obviously wasn't though. Small world!

OP posts:
Skyler · 20/11/2006 10:04

Wow how strange! Lol. It is truly a small world.

SecondhandRose · 20/11/2006 17:11

Skyler, I'll keep an eye out for them next time and say Hi, they'll think I'm bonkers!! Mention them sitting on the bench near the boating lake (not right next to it, about 20ft away and see what they say!).

OP posts:
Skyler · 20/11/2006 20:10

I will for sure. I will speak to Mum tomorrow and let you know. They will think I have a Private Eye on them lol.

Skyler · 22/11/2006 21:41

Hello Rose
It was def my parents lol. They were eating a pasty! They apologised as they were not looking their best .
