what food/snacks can I take on board?

we are travelling to Lanzarote next week and it will be DC teatime while we are on board. I want to avoid paying stupid amounts for airline food and hoped for some advice about what I can take on board and/or tips from seasoned travellers about what they have found easy to take in hand luggage. Thanks

Whatever you want really. The restrictions are for liquids not solid foods. You could buy drinks after security

UnspecialSnowflake · 14/05/2015 07:14

You can take any food you want, you can't take drinks. You can buy drinks airside at the airport though.

I avoid chocolate and anything too messy, meat in sandwiches in case your delayed and it sits around out of the fridge for too long and as a curtesy to other passenger I don't bring very smelly foods or nuts in case of allergies.

Whatever you want. Which airport are you flying from? I am a veteran of many and will happily advise on post security nosh options Grin (I'd rather buy a sandwich from Pret at the airport than have the faff of packing a lunch)

Anything. Usually for a short flight like that I would just give them a later bigger lunch than usual, then they can just snack if needed and eat on arrival of still hungry. Airport food in places like boots is the same cost as elsewhere

If flying with BA you will get a drink and snack also

Things like breadsticks/ carrot and cucumber in pot/ mini pretzels/ nairns oat biscuits ( can get diff flavours and wrapped in small packets)

Anything that doesn't have liquid or paste and doesn't need refrigeration.
Jam, butter etc may get held at security as pastes eg jam sandwich or sandwich with butter in
I take bread sticks, dry cereal, bars, crisps etc

We usually eat at airport before boarding.

after 10 years people would hopefully have realised that the restrictions are on liquids, gels and pastes. Not just liquids.

Hoppinggreen · 14/05/2015 10:17

I usually take cheese sarnies, crisps, fruit bars, grapes, rice cake
We fly several times a year and I've never had a problem.

dementedpixie · 14/05/2015 10:46

of course they won't remove a jam sandwich!

dementedpixie · 14/05/2015 10:49

www.gov.uk/hand-luggage-restrictions/overview - they would take a jar of jam over 100ml but not a scraping of jam in a sandwich

mamabluestar · 14/05/2015 18:51

thanks for the advice. I think we will try late lunch and snacks on the plane.

Rootypig, we are travelling from Manchester if you have any knowledge of the airport that would be great Smile

We normally fly from there (drive down from Scotland as flights are cheaper). We check our cases in the night before so it is quicker on the day of the flight.

We usually buy a Boots meal deal at the airport and eat that on the flight, often a much cheaper and tastier option than the on flight meal.
Have a lovely holiday Smile
