Help - where to go in Winchester on Sunday

indignatio · 08/11/2006 07:09

I have arranged to meet a friend her dh and dds in Winchester for lunch on Sunday. I have no idea where to book (should have thought of that before now - I know). Ideally it would be somewhere with good food as despite various diets we all love our food - but also somewhere 2 4 yo and one 3 yo would have a good time. The weather is supposed to be cold but not raining - so perhaps a nice pub with decent food and an outside play area

Any suggestions would be gratefully received

About the Plough pub, it is quite nice, but not in Winchester itself, so if you aren't all coming by car I'd think again. By car it's only a few minutes out of town.

Bramshott · 09/11/2006 09:57

I've always thought there should be some great website where you can put in your address, and then your friend's address, and what you're interested in - eating, shopping, outdooor kids activities, soft play etc, and it would come up with the perfect place to meet in between! The number of times I've sat poring over the road book trying to work out where to meet!

Where are you indignatio? We're near Alton so are often to be found at Alice Holt.

indignatio · 09/11/2006 10:15

Bramshott - we are quite near Bramshott so I thought you would be closer !

aDad - quite nice doesn't sound too great. Following from Cod's link I saw a place called The running Horse in Littleton - any knowledge of this ? gastropub
Allye - Marlow sounds great for the summer will bear that one in mind

Indignatio - I haven't eaten at the Plough since I used to work nearby, again a long time ago. I'm sure it's had the gastro-treatment and the location is nice and rural.

My favourite country boozer was the Bush Inn at Avington, but that's pricey eating, and dont think it's got a family room but stunning place and location, going through thatched villages and a little ford to get there.

The Littleton one I dont know, been past it but not in - Littleton is on the way to the Plough, kind of on the edge of winchester as opposed to countryside setting.

Dont think i am being very helpful!

aada is jus jealous of my sueprsor findign abilities

aDadOnMumsnet · 09/11/2006 10:29

I meant Ovington

and it does have a family room

bit more off the beaten track though

The Bush

aDadOnMumsnet · 09/11/2006 10:35

beat that cod!

actually if you haven't been there it's well nice.

aDadOnMumsnet · 09/11/2006 10:46

actually be careful if you do go there cod, they've got stuffed fish on the walls.

Maybe you'd be alright as you're not a river dweller.

DumbledoresGirl · 09/11/2006 10:48

Growl at a Dad on Mumsnet who is obviously ignoring me! Huh! The Bush was one of my haunts too. And a lovely gastro pub in my day was that one on the river near Stockbridge - the village name escapes me. So not much use here then!

DG: Aide memoire (?) Longstock

Maybe. What was the pub called then?

DumbledoresGirl · 09/11/2006 10:53

Was the pub called the trout or was it just trout that I ate there?

indignatio · 09/11/2006 10:56

DG The Peat spade ?

Dear me, I am sad. I have been sitting here trying to remember back to my teens and 20s and have finally remembered! It was the Mayfly. Not sure of the village though.

DumbledoresGirl · 09/11/2006 11:04

Here but it is a few miles from Winchester down a small lane and I am not sure how kiddie friendly it is - literally on the banks of the Test.

oh, ah DG sorry, hadn't seen that. I just turned 35. You?

mayfly nice too!

DumbledoresGirl · 09/11/2006 11:12

Oh well you know aDad... you should never ask a woman her age......

But safe to say, I am older So we don't know each other, so you are safe to say (if you want) where you went to school. I was at Danemark and Peter Symonds.

aDadOnMumsnet · 09/11/2006 11:16

danemark does give your age away - my brother went to montgomery. i didn't. i kind of dont want to say because i know there are other winchester folk on here and it was a small place!

DumbledoresGirl · 09/11/2006 11:50

Oh OK - your notoriety must be great! Respect!

But oi, saying Danemark gives away my age makes me feel about 65! My sister and brother were old enough to go to the old grammar schools there - so they must be in their 80s now!

aDadOnMumsnet · 09/11/2006 11:56

Sorry DG, I was only pulling your leg of course. Oh and I hope your mum has continued to get better.

Right hijack OVER! Apologies!

Ignatio, hope you're now not just super-confused as to which of these pubs to choose!

Allye · 09/11/2006 12:03

indignatio.

If you do find/go somewhere suitable for the little ones in winchester (mine are 2yrs and 3.5yrs) please let me know!!!

CountessDracula · 09/11/2006 12:14

The Wykeham Arms does the best pub food in Winchester, it has a smallish garden but don't think there is a play area

The Bush at Ovington is cute but food hideously overpriced for what it is. I don't think it has a play area just the garden

The Tichborne Arms is good as is The Globe in Alresford, right on a lake and you can feed the ducks.

The Chestnut Horse in Easton does nice food, also a bit overpriced, and has a garden but no play area.

The Ship Inn at Owslebury has an outdoor play area I am pretty sure

DumbledoresGirl · 09/11/2006 12:55

Thank you aDadonMumsnet - she is continuing to astonish all with her recovery, but still some way to go. Family Christmas at home (Winchester) is still happening though - we weren't sure until this week if we could do it - so happiness all round here at the moment!

Sorry indignatio for hijack. It is just nice to talk to someone from the ol' home town!
