What speed is most economical for fuel consumption?

I never seem to be away from the garage, £20 diesel does me no time. I have a feeling if I drove a little slower - ie - staying out of the fast lane, I might find it goes a bit further. Any suggestions? Or am I just a tight-wad

56 MPH according to my dad.

Also if you are going down a hill and use engine braking (ie a low gear) you use none whatsoever.

Reverse into spaces as reversing when cold uses more fuel.

And plan ahead - don't speed up only to hit the brakes at the next red light.

I think the key thing is to drive at a consistent speed - the less you acclerate and break the better. so it depends on the kind of roads to an extent. and when you do need to slow down/speed up do it smoothly and gradually

Yeah, I think I need to be a little more consistant and less impulsive. I had heard that 56 was economical, I'll just have to leave the house a bit earlier.

Does your car have cruise control?

multitasker · 04/11/2006 14:57

No cruise control, I think I do need to just slow down a bit. I do lots of short journeys - school run etc, so thats probably why the fuel doesn't seem to be lasting any time.

between 55-60 MPH is the most economical for fuel sonsumption.

of course this isnt so great if you do most of your driving in town.

If you use your clutch too much (drive along with teh clutch pedal pressed) you will waste a lot of fuel as well.

I do have a bad habit of sitting on a hill - maybe at lights in gear but holding it on the clutch - IYKWIM so must use handbrake more.

i thought it was around 60... but think car companies use 56mph to see what their fuel consumption is so i guess that oughta be the most efficient
