Budget Weekend Away...

My DP and I have a Friday booked off work in June and want to go somewhere for as cheaply as possible (Getting married this year!)

We live in Leeds and our first thought was London for a theatre/sightseeing/shopping/meals out kind of break but its working out too expensive. I then considered Edinburgh but its over four hours drive which would take up a lot of valuable time (Train/Flights too expensive)

Can anyone recommend a city or coastal town we can visit? We've already done York/Harrogate, Scarborough/Whitby, Manchester & Sheffield.

Lake District or country hotel. What kind of things do you like to do?

gotredonyou · 14/04/2015 12:15

Lake District does look beautiful but it seems all there is to do is walk??

We both enjoy country walks pubs when its sunny but I prefer somewhere with a good high street, restaurants, comedy clubs, sightseeing etc..

York or Newcastle?

Mostlyjustaluker · 14/04/2015 12:17

It depends were you go. You don't have to do proper walking I certainly won't do that either, but there ar nice pubs, walks around the sides of lakes, ferries across the lakes and steam trains.

Yes to newacstle. I live here so I did not think of it as a place to visit.

Liverpool. lots to do. Fabulous shops, theatres, nice restaurants, very friendly. Easy transports links and lots of parking

gotredonyou · 14/04/2015 13:18

Thanks all, but then I worry that we're spending money on transport/hotels to do everything we could do in Leeds! (I'm an overthinker I know)

don't know how far chester is from you but I am told that is very York like. I know you said Edinburgh is a no no but we went last year and stayed in the murrayfield hotel which was lovely and only 50odd a night.

Also if you did fancy a return to York cant recommend the ashberry hotel enough. have also stayed at fifth milestone cottage on the outskirts which was lovely too.

can't fault Newcastle (from another north easterner)

gotredonyou · 14/04/2015 15:46

Murrayfield Hotel is fully booked for my dates but plenty of apartments on airbnb still free hmmm! x

Glasgow. Walkable but loads going on –great bars, pubs, restaurants, good shopping, art, live music. Rennie Mackintosh stuff for your 'history/sightseeing' fix. Beautiful walks by the River Kelvin. It's friendly and buzzy. I'd highly recommend it.

Iwasbornin1993 · 14/04/2015 15:59

Liverpool definitely

gingerbreadmam · 14/04/2015 17:07

sounds silly but did u ring the murrayfield? i only ask as they have a house and hotel and when i looked online i could only find the house to book but we rang and booked hotel. its quite big too.

gotredonyou · 15/04/2015 10:02

Hi ginger, No I didn't ring them but it looks like they have two different websites- one for the house & one for the hotel and both are booked that weekend. I've found a great apartment next to Holyrood Park, 20 min walk from the centre on airbnb but its £170 for two nights self catering hmmm
