Yes! It's a beautiful city. Lots of stuff to see, big country parks near by.

Yes!

One of my favourite places :). Although it's a long time since I've been :(

Not your typical us city, quirky and quite laid back. Lots of history, and not so much of the skyscrapers and shiny big buildings.

Great place for kids.

Philly cheesesteak is a must.

Hi,

I'm glad I've found this post. I've seen some great priced flights for August and have been madly researching child friendly Philly! My kids will be 8 and 10. It does look a great place, I've been thinking about staying a few days there, then going down to Atlantic City for a beachy week, then a few more Philly days before we come home.

What about you bealola, did you decide to go?

slicedfinger · 29/04/2015 22:58

It is several years since we went, but the aquarium and the Please touch museum were both loved by our DC who I think were 4, 6 and 8 at the time.

I'd also recommend the Franklin Institute and the Art Museum.

I would NOT recommend Atlantic City for a beachy week with the kids. There are really nice family friendly beaches in New Jersey. Atlantic City is not one of them. Cape May or Ocean City are better bets - pun somewhat intended. Grin

Yes to Philly, an emphatic no to Atlantic City. Cape May and Ocean City are both good suggestions, though I slightly prefer Cape May.

There is plenty to keep you busy in the city but try and make it out to places like Longwood Gardens and Lancaster County.

The Pine Barrens in NJ is a fantastic place to visit, esp if you can organise a canoeing trip. Alternatively head up to the Poconos.

Curlybrunette · 30/04/2015 17:11

Oh right, no to Atlantic City noted! Why not, is there something wrong with it or just that the other places are better for families?

I was thinking of avoiding driving (we've never driven abroad and the original going to Atlantic City plan seemed easy by train) do you think we can manage without a car or would it just make it so much better with one. I aren't against driving, but have never needed to on our previous holidays.

I'll google Cape May and Ocean City.

I did fancy a few days off road somewhere, like in one of the forests. I just found this, thanks for recommending Pine Barrens alteredimages:

I love a good holiday planning session!

Atlantic City used to be nice - 40 years ago. It's now a run down gambling town - that's why there are so many bus/trains that go there. It is really not a nice place. At this point even the casinos are closing down because they can't compete with the casinos on Native American lands.

I think you'll find that if you head to the beach or somewhere out of Philly, you'll need a car. Don't panic, though. It's not hard to drive in the U.S. and it will open up a lot more choices as to where to go. Once you get out of Philly (like driving in any city) the traffic becomes much easier to deal with. Just make sure you've got a GPS available and you're good to go!
