There is a lovely restaurant called 'The Tower' on top of teh museum. You have to book in advance and it is quite expensive. If you book early evening though, about 6pm they do a set menu which is a lot cheaper. It has views over the city and is very stylish. Have fun, it is a great city. Good shops and friendly people.

We did a ghost walk in the evening which was funny. Got to see the old part of the city which was interesting.

nailpolish · 01/11/2006 16:16

You could also consider Oloroso, Centotre or the Atrium. I've had excellent meals at all of them, a pretty good one at the Tower and extremely mixed experiences at the Witchery (varying from fab to competely shite). The Witchery is the loveliest to look at, and the most atmospheric, of all of them, certainly

v popular

I like Maison Bleu on Victoria Street...beautifully lit at night, very romantic, bustling restaurant with nice little drinks area and affordable.

You need to walk lots to do Edinburgh justice I think....the gardens, the grassmarket, up to the royal mile (touristy but still very nice), George Street for Designer Shopping. You should also walk up Arthurs Seat if it's clear and nice weather...amazing views. Afternoon tea at the Balmoral Hotel v. nice.

You can an open top bus to drive you around day 1 to get your bearings.
