Why is it so difficult to find two bed properties?

We are family of four with 2 DCs 10 & 13 wanting to go on holiday for a couple of weeks somewhere hot with facilities etc. it seems that the default option for 4 is a one bedroom with sofa bed. I'm sorry but I don't want to sleep on a sofa bed for two weeks and have to put it up and down etc. appreciate we can hopefully afford to have an extra room but finding it very frustrating searching on websites and finding that two bedroom properties don't exist or they are 'special request'

Have thought about owners direct as have lots of friends who have used it and been to great places but don't think that the kind of resort we are looking for with big pool and stuff to do for kids is on owners direct?

Sorry felt like a bit of a rant ,...but welcome to hear from any travel agents!

Try looking for properties that sleep six .
Try Pierre et vacancies for places with on site pool sports etc. belle dune is nice get a house for 8 so you have enough rooms .

purpleprincess · 31/03/2015 22:36

Thanks for the tip cestlavielife I have heard of Pierre et vacances so will look but not that keen on France (it's just been number of times). Still find it frustrating and just don't get why it works like that. Also don't want to be charged under occupancy....

My aunt has (not) been in a number of short vacations.... If I need to fill an extra name. Never been asked but if so then she "got sick" couldn't come.... Or had to "work" .

iwantgin · 31/03/2015 23:20

Do you mean in a hotel, or an apartment?

There are some two bedroomed apartments around - but you are right, they are more difficult to find. sometimes on the search page you have to go right in to the offer and then see if you change the room type to a 2 bed.

Hotels - would be a case of booking two adjoining rooms I guess.

If you booked a two bed apartment, you would be charged an under occupancy supplement - as they want to cram in 6 guests - but it has to be worth it for the extra space particularly if it's for a fortnight.

cestlavielife · 01/04/2015 09:36

you will pay as tho for six persons but they wont or shouldnt charge you on topof that for under occupancy... i've had five people in a three bed sleeps six place in uk and not been charged extra, it was same price for accommodation however many people.

where my aunt has (not) come with i've sometimes paid for her as it's been "per person" . it depends.

pierre et vacances in france i've been with five people for three bed place and not been charged extra for missing person - was just the same cost as if it were for six. but yes a two-bedroom place will inevitably be more than a one bed plus sofa bed place...

Costacoffeeplease · 01/04/2015 09:54

There are lots of two bed apartments with communal pools on places like owners direct/homeaway/holidaylettings - which country are you looking to go to?

iwantgin · 01/04/2015 10:31

cestlavielife - the Under Occupancy supplements are applied when booked as part of a package holiday with the flights and accommodation together.

If just booking the accomodation on your own, then it's the price for the house.

SooticaTheWitchesCat · 02/04/2015 11:01

It depends on where you want to go. We have booked nice 2 bedroomed apartments in Turkey. We have also booked this year in a 2 bed apartment in Corfu.

iseenodust · 02/04/2015 14:16

Take a look at this hotel on Majorca. We stayed there in a proper double room with an adjacent room for DS with bunk beds & own TV (it has no door directly from corridor). The nearest beach is 2 mins walk away and backed by pine trees not a road! We booked direct & budget airline.

Decorhate · 02/04/2015 15:35

I was just moaning about this today. Often there are places where I know they definitely have 2 bed apartments but travel agents only offer 1 bed ones. Yes I know you can book it all separately yourself but sometimes that's a faff (and often flights already booked up by travel companies).
I think the inflexibility of package holidays isn't doing travel agents any favours

purpleprincess · 02/04/2015 17:34

Thanks for your replies....agree with Decor that sometimes doing separately is a PITA. Have found personal travel agent who is looking for some stuff for us.....think I'm going way too fussy! But when you're spending a few thousand on your only holiday of the year it needs to be the right thing.

What's wrong with having your DCs on a sofa bed?

2 bed apts are for 6 (adults).

You want one for 2. You are going to get charged a fortune!

Package holiday resorts are bulit around 2+2 sharing a 1 bed apt.

purpleprincess · 02/04/2015 19:59

If some people want to do that then it's fine but my ds 13 & dd 10 would not want to share a bed although fine to share a room and also means everyone has to go to bed at same time. I'm not saying 1 bed appt for 4 people is wrong it's just not for us on a two week holiday that's all.

We only have one 9yr old DS but we still look for 2 bedroomed places.

DH likes to go to bed later than I do and watch a bit of TV in the evening, plus we like having a bit of space to relax without having to tidy away a bed every day.

We tend to book flights and accomodation separately as it's cheaper but try looking here www.jamesvillas.co.uk/holiday-resorts for some ideas - it's s/c accomodation so as many beds as you want, but at holiday resort destinations so you have access to restaurants and entertainment.

purpleprincess · 02/04/2015 21:59

Yay Rookiemere! Totally agree about the whole putting bed away etc. we have been looking at James villas resorts although some are really expensive but I keep going back to their website. Have you been to any James villas resorts before?

rookiemere · 02/04/2015 22:22

We went to the Regency country club with them one year in Tenerife and liked it so much that we have been back 4 times ( this is in the October break). However I did end up booking it myself after the first time as it does work out less expensive, still not a cheap holiday by any means.

This year we're splitting our time between a nice (2 bed) apartment which is close to the beach and nice restaurants, but has no atmosphere or entertainment by the pool and the Regency for the other nights which DS absolutely loves.

Costacoffeeplease · 03/04/2015 06:16

I look after some two bed properties, and I would never let a party of 6 rent one, 2 people per bedroom plus a folding bed/cot is the maximum

rookiemere · 03/04/2015 08:37

Thinking about it, we've stayed in a lot of 2 bed places and I have researched more. Where were you thinking of going and what sort of budget and I'll see if I can think of anywhere else.

MissCalamity · 03/04/2015 11:20

I was also looking at 2 bed apartments as I don't like the idea of a sofa bed. I'm sure Jet2 holidays offered the option when inputting your criteria.
Alpha Rooms do also have the option, but then it wouldn't be a package holiday.

peaz · 04/04/2015 22:17

We stayed here on a half board basis: www.hotelmarelen.gr/ last year. Food wasn't great and it didn't tick a lot of boxes for us but it seemed that we were in the minority. BUT it had two bedrooms and a kitchen area (not a massive living area).

The year before we were here: www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Hotel_Review-g189117-d610315-Reviews-Apartamentos_Turisticos_Marsol-Lagos_Faro_District_Algarve.html. It was self catering, two bed rooms, with a kitchen diner and living area. They are service apartments so it was cleaned daily. Lagos is beautiful, and much preferred this to the Kalamaki holiday. Eating out was cheap but Lagos is small and does get ridiculously busy during August apparently.

singaporefling · 05/04/2015 00:02

Have a look at www.thepenthousekalkan.com - loads to do nearby - our 5 kids have always loved the area/beach clubs/watersports/tours and we've always enjoyed the restaurants /cafes & shops...

Ohthepressure · 06/04/2015 14:10

We've stayed in Portugal at Lagos Marina in the past, lovely 2 bed apartments. Not a bad walk to the beach and to the town, and there were a few restaurants in the Marina complex when we were there, a while ago now. Have a look here : www.ownersdirect.co.uk/lagos-marina.htm . What are your kids planning to do? Are they a bit old for kids clubs? Or if you have a large budget there's the Sheraton Pine Cliffs near Albufeira, they have 2 bed golf suites and other even swankier apartments, and all the kids activities you can shake a stick at. But in the summer hols that'll be £££

LIZS · 06/04/2015 14:24

For P and v you pay per property , always size up. They cover further than France now.

cococandyfloss · 06/04/2015 16:08

We have used owners direct/holidayslettings etc for properties (although for 3 beds) if you put in sleeps 4+ or put in number of bedrooms rather than sleeps 4 then you will get 2 bed options up rather than a one bed with a sofabed.

purpleprincess · 08/04/2015 21:57

Thanks for all your ideas and suggestions. Have finally booked something as just had to JFDI! It's a James villa resort near Albufeira and needless to say had two bedrooms....
