Munich with children?

Hi all, we are considering Munich for the summer break. We have two DC, aged 9 and 7. The information I have so far found online is very encouraging, but I was also hoping to hear recommendations and advice from any mums-netters who have been or are very familiar with the place. I would really appreciate any pointers or extra suggestions! Thanks in advance.

We went this past January (in the snow!) with three children aged 6, 10 and 13. We loved it and would like to go back in summer. The zoo was Suprisingly excellent (elephants rolling and eating snowballs was a highlight!), the palaces (always our favourites in Germany/Austria) and the museum of musical instruments was a don't miss (seriously - read the reviews on trip advisor!). The kids liked travelling on the trans too. Watching the surfers (in snow!) on the wave in the river was super cool too.

Thanks Wiifitmama. Sounds fun! Did you stay in he city centre and how did you find your accommodation? We are considering self catering in the centre so as to be able to travel from the train station to places like Lego land.

About to go on Friday for 4 days will let you know when we get back !! We are staying in 2 different hotels in the city centre (2 nights in each)

We actually did a home exchange. We were staying to the west near the palace (near Pasing). The transport system is excellent though so where ever you are will be easy. We liked being in a quieter more residential area. It also had the benefit of being walking distance from a leisure centre with water slides etc. We really did love the city and would highly recommend it. We live Germany but normally go to small mountain villages. This was quite a change and we live in central London so I wasn't sure about going to a city. But it was great!

Can I be a hanger on on this thread? We are going in the summer too.

We've visited a lot with our dc because of dh's family. Definitely agree the zoo is great with a lovely play area. In the summer we used the public swimming pool a lot, westbad was the closest to us (pasing), lovely outdoor pools surrounded by grass.
In the centre the deutsche museum is a don't miss - quite science museum-y and good for a rainy day.
In the summer my absolute favourite was to go out of the city about half an hour (we went by car but am sure it's possible to do it by other means) and visit the pre-alpine lakes that have nice bathing areas and are beautiful if a little 'fresh' to swim in!
Great cycle paths if that's your thing, and the Olympic Park has some good stuff including a sealife centre.

Also - loved the many 'biergartens' with good play areas and good simple food, great to go to with kids.

Oh wow thanks ladies for the very useful feedback! deplorabelle yes by all means join in and make use of this thread! Iwantdogger: The zoo is definitely on or list as is the museum. We are also considering seeing as much of the parks and the wildlife part as possible and getting the boys to do lots of activity. Does the Olympic park work for under 10s?

Our DCs are both under 10, prob were under 5 last time we went - to be honest we've only been to the Olympic park complex in the winter to the sealife centre but I think there's quite a bit else there too like swimming.

I went to the Deutsche Museum as a kid and was blown away by it. Its great.

Starnberg lake was where we used to go - and its a lovely cycle out through the woods to get there. Very pretty.

The Lenbachhaus is one of my fave art collections ever - and its small so the kids won't get too bored as it doesn't take long to get round.

Thanks shutuplegs. My kids and museums are a bad mix:) unkess it is an interactive child friendly hands on kind !
We have booked our flights nd our accomodation now. Next step set up the itineray and make sure we do not miss any places worth seeing. We went to Switzerlnd last year and it was absolutely great for all of us. I am more inot scenery and outdoor activities whilst DH loves museums and art and culture. The DC just wanted to be able to run around, climb, jumo and play..so it was a good combo trip!

We're off in the morning with our three DCs (5,3 and 9 months). Only just found this thread and so grateful for the museum tips as weather's looking shocking, killing off our leisurely mosey plans!

Thanks all!
