What would you do there for a week in July?

Hi, not sure if this would be enough for a week, we spent a few days there last summer - catch the ferry to Bygdoy - the museum island - it was fantastic - we saw

~the Viking Ship Museum- 1,000 yr old wooden boats - very busy
~ the Kon-Tiki Museum with the original Pacific Ocean crossing raft
~ the Fram - from the Polar explorations
~ my unexpected favourite - the Norwegian Museum of Cultural History with outdoor exhibits - old houses, a Stave church, brilliant displays on Sami culture, folk costumes.

Back in Oslo there's a Munch museum, though the National Gallery has 'The Scream'; the City Hall (where Nobel Prizes are awarded) is a fantastically decorated building; and the Nobel Peace Centre which had very interesting displays and a great collection of inspiring post cards.

We did all of this through the Oslo Pass which covered ferries, transport in quite a wide area (not the airport), museum entrances, a couple of swimming pools, and other discounts. We read about it in the Norway Lonely Planet, or you can try www.visitoslo.com hope that works.

The long days and late sun was great, accommodation was good value with excellent breakfasts, there was a heat wave (30 C) so the city authorities filled the empty fountains with water so people could paddle and cool down - very impressed!

Hope this helps - I'd happily go again.

I went on a very brief visit a few years ago and would second the Viking Ship museum - it's fantastic and you can get a ferry there which is a lovely trip. The Opera House is awesome, worth a trip even if you don't see a show. You can walk up the outside and the views are fabulous. Take an eye mask - it really won't get dark at that time of year and hotel curtains aren't always great! Have a fab time, I'm really jealous!

EBee, please do go on Grin

I just think it would be a bit different and interesting but I do want to make sure there's enough for us to do. I guess if we're there for a week, we could get a train or a bus out somewhere (I guess public transport is good in Norway). We'd have DS who is 13, with us, so it would be good to have some down time from the culture too.

Eeek at not going dark! That would be, erm, interesting!

We would book something through Airbnb I think. So what I also need to know is which areas of the city to go for.

Hi Mary, we went as a family (dds 16 & 20) having spent the previous week in Denmark (Copenhagen & the coast) - Vikings were a bit of a theme Grin.

Oslo was much cheaper for accommodation - we stayed at the brilliantly central Park Inn by Radisson Oslo . There are several Radissons but this one was cheaper and better located than the rest. We found it on Expedia (I think). The visitoslo site has a useful map that shows accommodation options including B&Bs and apartments, which might be useful.

Because Oslo is more of a business than holiday destination it seems that hotels in the city offer very good deals in the summer and we had great rooms (with black out curtains), a fabulous and very filling breakfast, and easy walking distance to the harbour and city.

Eating out was pricey but after Denmark it was not such a shock, there are McDonalds & Burger King for a quick pit stop and pizza places that were ok price wise.

The Oslo Pass covers a fair bit of travel in 'greater' Oslo but it might be cheaper to use the pass for the pricey attractions in Oslo/Bygdoy, and then just buy tickets to go further afield. We had a 3 day pass which covered the sights we wanted to visit and included a trip on a traditional sailing ship in the Inner Fjord.

We were so lucky with the weather that we spent a lot of time just wandering around the harbour area, lots of boats, views, bars and restaurants... We're having a hard time finding something to follow it with this year.

Best wishes

Vigeland sculpture park..

So long as you not squeamish or embarrassed about naked bodies. (The sculptures)

The Icebar, nice and cool in summer.
Oslo is very expensive to eat out so if your not half board you might want to plan around where you might eat.
