Liquid restrictions on flights

We've been told that we have to taste all baby milk before boarding. We're going on an 8 hour flight and were planning on taking ready made up cartons. I've not used them before so correct me if I'm wrong but don't they have to be used within an hour of opening?
We're staying at a hotel the night before so access to boiled cooled water will be limited and I'm not keen on using bottled water as I thought the mineral content was too high for making up milk.
I'm not sure what we should do.
Any advice please?

i think that if the cartons are sealed and are from a reputable supplier (c&g, SmA etc) then you should be ok.

it may be worth calling your tour operator and checking though

I've just spoken to Virgin and they said that they very strictly require that all milk must be tasted by accompanying passenger and then we can hand it to the cabin crew who will put it in the fridge until we need it.
Is this ok?
Does ready made milk keep once opened?

recently came back from boston USA, travelling with AA and although DD is breastfed I wanted to take cooled boiled water in a bottle and was told to taste it at the security gates, I gave DD some as if I had tasted it this would have made it less sterile for DD when she wanted it.
Maybe you can take powder milk and boiled water. I also needed to take some paracetamol in syrup for DD but was told I could only take 50ml so I transferred some of the 100ml bottle into another bottle at home B4 travelling, but they will make you taste this so be worned.

they'll be fine ..

can you not take powdered formula and bottles of boiled water?

I posted this on the Longhaul board a couple of weeks ago - details of our experience.

We flew from LHR to JFK last month - no problems on the way out. We took bottles with sterile water in them and separate powder - tasted the water at security and the jars of baby food we had (once on board we had the cabin crew refrigerate them).

Coming back, we flew Dulles to LHR and the swines on security wouldn't let us take the water. We argued but were told in no uncertain terms "this is not Heathrow". We were told to buy mineral water after security (at Dulles you can buy duty frees as they are taken down to the door of the aircraft for you to collect there - not entirely sure this is a good thing but there you go), but my husband explained that mineral water isn't the best thing for babies due to the mineral content. Deaf ears. Then we were told "my child has tap water - it won't kill your baby". Also they weren't remotely interested in the jars of food.

We were totally furious but had no choice. The cabin crew (BA) gave us a bottle of Highland Spring on board which we used but my little girl was a bit sick and I blame that to be honest.

I don't mind the security but I really wish they'd have some degree of consistency across the board. It I'd have known the Dulles rules I'd have saved some cartons for the flight as they would have been fine with us not opening them.

It's a crazy world...

tchoklat - I use formula and tbh, with the cartons only open it when using it. It does say it should be used within the hour (as does made up formula). My suggestion would be to use mineral water - if we need to we use Evian as recommended by my HV and I don't think a small amount will do any harm.

We also recently travelled and I had to taste the formula powder, then we bought a bottle of Evian once through security.

Hth - enjoy your holiday!

Read in today's paper that the ban on liquids is being lifted next week- don't know when you're flying, but it may help you.

Think it depends on the airport- when we flew last week from Tunisia, it was fine to go through security with bottles of water- no questions asked.

At Gatwick, on our next flight home, the security took make-up off me(which I had forgotten about in my giant sack of a bag) Brand new Mac lip gloss, mascara and older lip gloss- was gutted. Reason- it is liquid was the answer given. Saw people tasting milk and medicines.
