Where to go, what to see?
never been before, can just about get 3 weeks in August.
Should I spend it going from sight to sight or lounge in a villa.

We went to Tuscany in Augsut too and stayed in a villa, our pool was lovely and warm though Smile

We hired a car and went to see all the amazing places around, there is so much to see, we loved it.

Lake Garda. We have been twice, both times in August. The weather is perfect and there is loads to see and do. You can lounge by a pool part of the time, get on a ferry to another town on the lake, do a day trip to Verona and another day trip to Venice.

And it is utterly beautiful.

^this^

I'm going in July woohoo!

FoodieMum3 · 18/03/2015 11:48

Another vote for Lake Garda. I've been in August. It's stunning. I've stayed in Riva and Torbole (north) and took day trips by boat all over the lake.
We also went on day trips to Verona and Venice.

Def go to sore to. It's the gateway to so many gorgeous places...

Amalfi
Ravello and positano ...all gorgeous resorts famous for being so
Boat trip to Capri which is lovely and known for rich and famous
Boat trip to Ischia known for the setting of the Talented Mr Ripley and also has lots of natural spas.
Also handy for Pompeii.

Sore to itself is lovely but having so many gorgeous/interesting places nearby it's a definite must IMO!

Buttercupsandaisies · 21/03/2015 08:59

Also we did a Rome overnight tour from sorrento.

Buttercupsandaisies · 21/03/2015 09:00

Sore to = Sorrento

Garda, Verona, Venice, or Florence, or Umbria/Tuscany. It will be very hot so take it easy, a few sights and lots of soaking up atmosphere, rather than trying to get to all the sights (there are too many to see them all anyway).
People said Venice smells in August but it didn't - we did go on more boat trips to islands to stay cool though. And ate a lot of ice cream...

nochocolateforlentteacake · 21/03/2015 09:06

I want to go..... Need my Italy fix, maybe next year...

I'd try for maybe 2 centres. It will be very hot, so a pool will be very welcome. I like Garda too, Como is pretty, then towards Tuscany for the cities. Rome is a bit if a drive from Siena though.

I wouldn't go much further south because of the heat (I melt).

Oh - speed cameras and congestion charges...

makemineapinot · 25/03/2015 21:26

Agree with not citrus - Venice was fab in August and not smelly at all!! We stayed in a campsite further up the coast - first time got the boat in which was fab but expensive, next time got bus in and third time, got off the bus at airport and got the boat from
There which was the most preferred option!! Venice is amazing and you could combine it with the lakes, Rome etc. now tempted to go back to Italy next year!!!

flipflopsonfifthavenue · 07/04/2015 19:15

Wherever you go it will be very very very hot in August. I grew up in Italy (Milan) and in the summer we'd go out in the morning, indoors for midday/early afternoon and out again late afternoon.

Littlefrenchmummy · 07/04/2015 19:24

You should go to sardinia ! Fishermans town called Bosa is beautiful. Amazing food, beaches, and super cheap ! X

LIZS · 13/04/2015 20:06

Can anyone suggest a nice hotel near Siena?

TeaandHobnobs · 13/04/2015 20:27

We stayed here in Siena - Villa Elda - just a short walk from the old city walls.

OP I would train, if you are planning to stay in cities/towns which you can reach by train or bus - this is what we did for 2 weeks for our honeymoon. Or drive, if you are planning to stay in a countryside villa. FIL likes to take the ferry from Portsmouth to Le Harve and stop one night in Burgundy en route, or take the eurotunnel to Calais and drive down to the Mont Blanc tunnel to cross to Italy, stopping somewhere on the way. We've also driven from Calais down to Besançon for a first stop, then round the north of Lake Geneva and over the Simplon pass for another stop in the Italian Lakes (we had 14mo DS so decided to take more breaks on the journey). Coming home we stopped in the Savoy region, then at Versailles, before getting the ferry back from Le Harve. It is a lot of driving, but a great adventure!

This year we are taking the motorail from the Netherlands to North Italy, to cut out more of the driving (will have 3mo DD with us this time)

SouthWestmom · 13/04/2015 20:56

I wouldn't bother with a city for long - they all empty out in August and loads of stuff is shut. I used to love it when I lived there and it was quiet!
Try

Cinqueterre
Countryside near Pisa or Sienna
Lake Garda or Lake Como
Cattolica
