where in the US? Late August and for just one week?

DD will be in the US (Maine) working during the summer. She finishes mid August and will then be travelling around for a while with friends.

Before that though, she has a week or so 'free' and so was thinking about flying out there and having a family holiday. It was actually her idea, so am not cramping her freedom or anything like that!

Plus, it'll make a change from our usual European summer holiday.

Was originally thinking of New Orleans, but worried that it'll be slap bang in hurricane season.

We already have a week in New York pencilled in for my 50th in 2017, so don't want there either.

Also am trying to stick to a budget of about £4500 for flights and accommodation. Is that even realistic?

Would welcome any ideas or suggestions?

Just to add in terms of numbers, that it'll be me, DP & DS(17) .

Can you give more details on what sort of holiday you're looking for? Active? Beach? Mountains? Culture? Do you want nature or a city - or a bit of both?

Personally, I wouldn't go to New Orleans in August......not because of hurricanes but because it will be hellishly hot and humid/muggy beyond belief.

A bit of both ideally- doable within a week?

but if it was to be one, then nature would be the option.

As DD will be working at a summer camp in Maine, would need to be 'different' nature to there iykwim.

have got confused with what's out there to see.

I highly recommend San Francisco. I've visited around 10 US cities and this is my favourite. Has a coast but not especially beachy. Lots to do and see and a great atmosphere in general. We went in June and although it was sunny, the odd microclimate is has made it a bit chilly my the wharf although warmed in the town.

We had a summer holiday in Vermont a few years ago. It was excellent.

I'd stick to the NE, closer for just a week. Boston will be hot like NYC but maybe for a couple of days then Cape Cod?

Charleston and Savannah?
Denver and Boulder?
Florida Keys?

I think the west coast for a week is a bit ambitious. I'm about to do my 18th trip this summer and for the first time I'm managing to get four nights in San Francisco. I have refused to do it before now and spoil it by cramming it into a very short time.

Seattle, loads to do and see, easy trips for a day or two, moderate climate. Denver is boring but a good starting point for more interesting things (Mesa Verde, Rocky Mountain National Park, Grand Lake, etc), however a week would not be long enough to get round them. Boston will be boiling and humid but is a great city to spend time in. I would pick Seattle every time, to be honest, although it is a long way from Maine so may not be realistic.

Maine, Vermont, Niagara falls, upstate NY, PA, Liberty Bell, Paul Revere's house, Concord MA.

Thanks everyone. I will do some research on all places mentioned.
