Depends on the age of the child. If you're looking for a seat for a child who's over 4 and can sit in a highback booster or booster cushion then there's lots and they tend to be fairly universal and fit most cars. But they still need checking.

Second stage (9 months to 4 yrs) it's almost impossible to say because they have to be fitted to each car. If they don't fit the car properly then they're downright dangerous.

Your best bet is probably to go to somewhere like John Lewis or Mothercare where they have a wide range of seats and brands and the sales people are trained to fit them. They will be able to fit them to your car but it will depend on the other cars and the shape of the seats and style of seatbelts as to whether it would fit all of them.

We had to buy a new stage 2 seat when we changed our car, and insure my mum and pils on our car because our seat doesn't fit their cars. For me personally, it's too much of a risk to put an improperly fitting seat into their cars and I'm not prepared to take that risk.

the maxicosi cabrio is great

no, i wouldn't buy 2nd hand - unless it's from a friend

not worth the risk

In that case it's a bit easier!! A lot of the carrier type ones are classed as 'universal', although they do recommend getting them checked, to be sure.

I've got a Britax Babysure which has 2 different seatbelt routes so it's more adaptable. It's very basic though, no headhugger, strap covers, hood etc. But it's only £39.99 in Argos , which you can't go far wrong with.

I'd second VK and avoid a second hand one unless you know its history. Even a small shunt can affect the safety of the seat and you just don't know what might have happened to it.

maxi cabrio is the one i was thinking of getting.
is it easy to get in and out of a car then?

I'm assuming you're talking about a seat for a small baby here?

I bought a mamas and papas primo viaggio, but found it way too upright for a newborn, in addition to which the head support is not very good. Also, in my Ford Ka (front seat as no airbag) the seatbelt is too short for it, though it fits onto the rear seat of a Skoda (just) and grandad's BMW (easily).

I now have a Maxi Cosi cabrio, which dd appears to be much more comfortable in - better angle and more head support - it fits both our cars (the seatbelt in the Ka is just long enough), is really easy to get in and out, and to get the seatbelt around. It's reasonably bulky to carry around, but apparently there is a set of wheels it fits onto.

Halfords offer a free fitting service, which means you can check whether the seat fits your car(s) and that the baby looks comfy in it, if you are buying after the baby is born - wish I'd known that before I forked out on the first seat.

Hope this helps.

i have a bebe confort creatis already, which fits with my pushchair. its great, but its a bit heavy, doesn't fit quite properly in all cars and i find it a bit fussy to fitin the ones it does fit...

That's why I bought the mamas and papas one. In theory it is really convenient, and I may go back to using it when dd is a bit bigger and can hold her head up.

hi there, have bought mothercare's own car seat. v. basic, but lightweight, easy to use and will also be a rocker. decided when the time comes to buy grandma a lightweight pushchair on its own as this car seat won't fit on any.
thanks for all helps. if its crap will let you know
