My DS catches the bus to 6th form - and his metro card costs £9,50 per week ( that's half price as he is a student).

I don't know how your friend gets one for £80 for a year? That's more like a monthly fee.

There are loads of different types - school children, students, young people..

I would phone the help line and ask them which would be suitable for you. Here is the link to wymetro website with details. metro

Do you work? Many employers in the area offer a company Metrocard scheme - you pay the much-reduced annual rate but on a monthly basis out of your salary.

Worth doing the sums on your different options. The bus-only card is significantly cheaper. Might be best to get a bus one for those trips and pay separately for trains if that's only once per week. Having said that, if you travel on trains at peak time, may still be worth it. I worked out it was still worth me getting a ticket for 3 days a week to work when I returned after mat leave, and that's before factoring in extra weekend trips and the reduced hassle of not having to buy tickets every day.
