Direct flight to Athens?

I'm quite surprised I can't seem to get one! I'd have thought it would be fairly straightforward ... (Going in May!)

Anyone been and had to change?

British Airways and Aegean both fly direct and multiple times a day.

Where are you looking? and where are you flying from?

lastnightiwenttomanderley · 28/02/2015 13:39

(used to go there weekly for work, often booking at short notice. Never had a problem?

mytartanscarf · 28/02/2015 13:47

Thanks; I just stuck 'Manchester to Athens' into Google Blush

Evidently I didn't look in the right places!

Thank you SO much. Will
Look at BA now Flowers

EasyJet and Aegean both fly manchester/athens

lastnightiwenttomanderley · 28/02/2015 14:08

Ah, I was LHR. Have you looked on skyscanner? if it's not as popular a route then it may not be daily. You can search for a whole month.

lotsofcheese · 28/02/2015 14:10

Are you in Scotland, Tartan? Easyjet fly to Athens from Edinburgh.

MirandaGoshawk · 28/02/2015 14:16

Ryanair go direct from Stansted & probably other places too. I've going with them at the end of April for £76 return.

Christelle2207 · 28/02/2015 14:17

If you're flying from manchester there won't be one every day.

mytartanscarf · 28/02/2015 14:18

Whoop ladies Grin Easyjet won the day :)

Thank you so much! (I wish I was from Edinburgh!)

Should be loads by May.
have you been before? Transport out of airport is really good now.

lastnightiwenttomanderley · 28/02/2015 15:15

Have a wonderful time! gallic is right, the new train line into town is really good but (to be honest) If you're arriving late at night I'd just hop in a cab.

mytartanscarf · 28/02/2015 15:15

No I've never been, I'm really excited! :)

Generally it is very safe but beware of pickpockets in tourist areas.
I used to wander around quite happily late at night. Pimps and dealers just ignored me!!!

This guy does a great travel guide. A bit Americanised but pretty accurate. The only thing I was wary of was bars full of men. Not that I felt unsafe but as a lone female it was a bit intimidating.

If you're planning on touring the antiquities there used to be a pass which lasted a few days and you could see several museums and sites. Personally I think the Parthenon can be avoided but if you do go, go early. The new archaeological museum wasn't open when I left but I wandered around the lobby area and it looked fabulous.

Someone posted recently about Athens and got a lot of suggestions, how long are you there for?

Oh...if anyone bothers you (not had it personally), curl your upper lip in disgust and call them a Malaka. I didn't spend a year on construction sites out there for nothing ;)

mytartanscarf · 28/02/2015 17:13

Brilliant thank you!

It might have been me who posted about Athens! It feels very real now I've booked my flight!

Lastnight is Malaka rude? What does it mean?

lastnightiwenttomanderley · 02/03/2015 21:36

It's essentially the greek version of wanker. Can be used as a term of endearment amongst friends (!) or just in it's usual form!

Oh, and tartan. I appreciate you're probably not only going to Athens for the airport but useful tip. When you get to Athens for your return journey, there are some shops beyond passport control in zone A(international) and diddly squat beyond security. Your best bet is to camp out in the cafe upstairs for a bit if you're early. Added bonus is that with an international departures ticket you can also access domestic departures (to the left as you walk through). Just show your boarding pass and they'll wave you through. I'm a Korres addict and the shop that side is a million times better than the international one, as are many of the others. Worth a look if you've got some free time.

Thank you! Grin

Thanks for the tip about the airport. My flight gets in at midnight - should I book a taxi in advance or take a chance?

Also, should I just get the taxi to drop me off at Syntagma Square & then walk, or will they know the smaller hotels? TIA

gallicgirl · 03/03/2015 18:50

They'll know the addresses. Write it down to show the driver and ask the price first.

No idea about booking or prices but can ask a friend if you really need to know.

lastnightiwenttomanderley · 03/03/2015 18:58

miranda it's a fixed fare - €35 before midnight and €50 afterwards. Most of the cabbies should know the hotels. If you're getting there late then I would recommend getting them to drop you at the door as it is a tricky place to get your bearings in after dark (fine once you've done it in daylight though!)

MirandaGoshawk · 04/03/2015 18:58

Great, thank you. Will look into it.
