stonehenge

Thinking of taking the DSs (4 and 7) to see Stonehenge during half-term, as DS1 has been doing stone age at school. Is there anything for kids to actually do there? I haven't been for about 30 years, when you could actually walk around the stones. Any suggestions for making a successful trip of it gratefully received. Thanks.

Have not been for a while si it may have changed but there is not much to do other than walk around especially for kids. WE used to stop off and wander around to give dp a break on our drive to Cornwall,

Now you have to stand miles and miles away...I can't see a 4 year-old being madly excited, tbh.

What about Avebury, where you can go inside the long barrow and there are more features to look at?

zubb · 25/10/2006 17:09

Not much to do there really - the 'visitors' centre is crap. You can walk round the stones, and you can listen to the audio tape, but it doesn't take long, and costs a lot.
If you are travelling to get there you could combine it with Avebury (if you want more stones) or drop into Salisbury to see the cathedral or Old Sarum castle old sarum .

That doesn't sound very positive does it - sorry. My kids love walking round it but we live near and are members of English Heritage so don't pay each time.

I'd deffinatly go to Avebury over Stonehenge, although the stones are smaller you can walk around them. I've never been to Woodhenge which is just outside Sailsbury, but you might want to check it out if you decide to visit Stonehenge, I've heard thats quite interesting to

albatros · 25/10/2006 17:12

Avebury is also free

sophy · 25/10/2006 19:28

Thanks for all your suggestions. We are 15 minutes from Avebury so have done that a few times, and was wondering if Stonehenge might seem disappointing by comparison. Sounds like it's not worth the special trip. Will look into going to Salisbury too but that makes for quite a long journey.

It's not that far from Avebury to Salisbury - about an hour at most. If you drive down from Devizes way you can stop at Stonehenge on the way down to Salisbury.

Another vote for Avebury. I loved it when I was younger. It is around the corner from Marlborough so you can pop in for an afternoon tea at Polly's tearooms. Swindon's Great Western Outlet centre is less than 10 miles too which has old trains in which the boys will probably like and a small Hamley's toyshop.

Sorry I hadn't read that you were local. My sales pitch for Avebury was all in vain .

Salisbury has a 'Polly's' as well now.

is there anyone else who can't help but pronounce the word as in spinal tap?

Not much to see at woodhenge but it was quite interesting to try and work out where all the posts stood.
