DH and I are considering taking off August and going away with the DCS. I need inspiration for ideas. Budget about £12k

British Colombia/Northern California. Exciting, good weather but not too hot. Ideal for active boys.

Killasandra · 20/02/2015 08:50

New Zealand won't be too cold. It's winter but it will be about 5-10 degrees.

Sweatshirt weather. Not winter coat weather.

Bonhomme - I'm not sure you can write off the whole of the largest continent in the world for August Grin True there's a lot of monsoon about but quite a lot of places in Asia are considered rather good at that time of year e.g. much of Malaysia (but not west coast), Vietnam esp the central part, quite a bit of Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Tibet.

Lots of ideas on the thread MaCoata - what do you think?

bonhomme · 21/02/2015 08:24

I did say generally :)

South Africa or Canada/Alaska. Bear in mind it will be very cold in the early mornings if you go to Kruger, although definitely worth going. The huge advantage with SA at the moment is that the Rand/pound exchange rate is brilliant for the £ at the moment - so good value. Late August just might have a few whales around in Hermanus. We have done both the suggestions above in August and it is perfectly possible with children in August.

Chile is a winter destination if you want to go to the South - our summertime is freezing in the South of Chile! Likewise avoid India. I am not sure I would recommend Nepal or Sri Lanka for August either. Pacific coast USA would also be good. So much to see and you can avoid amusement parks. There is an amazing car museum at Pasadena and the trolley cars are SF are great for children. Plenty of outdoors activities. You could consider Peru, Ecuador and the Amazon Basin. These are great in August. Look at a Family Adventure type company.

Canada - that's where we are off too, as fed up with the med being far too hot in the summer for us.

We've been to the Canadian Rockies before and are doing a road trip up from Vancouver -start off in Tofino - which has canoeing, and sea planes, we're stopping off in Whistler which has the longest zip wire in the world apparently (DS - soon to be 9, is very excited) , then driving up to the Rockies.

There's loads of great looking accomodation - happy to message you our itinery and places we're staying at ( no shared hotel rooms for me no surree) if you want.

ihatethecold · 23/02/2015 07:05

Have you booked it all yourself rookie, or through a travel agency?

rookiemere · 23/02/2015 07:09

We booked it ourselves. I looked at doing it through a travel agent but as we don't want to share bedrooms, I found them quite limited in the type of accommodations that they were able to offer.

youarekiddingme · 23/02/2015 07:20

What about hiring a camper van and touring Europe? You can combine some beach/coast with history and experiencing local customs.

ihatethecold · 23/02/2015 10:52

Thanks rookie. I'm really hoping to do a tour of Canada in the next few years.
I really want to see the amazing scenery.

rookiemere · 23/02/2015 16:40

Canada is amazing - we went pre DS and did a wonderful trip seeing Vancouver Island and the Canadian Rockies. It was so good in fact that we are repeating it with DS - there will be a bit of driving, but I've booked nice accomodation that has either hot tubs or swimming pools so I'm hoping that this, plus the outdoorsy stuff and zip wire will make it DS friendly !

I'll pm you our details - someone else wanted to know so it's a cut and paste job, but I would definitely recommend western Canada, it's so amazing. Nows a good time to book - flights don't seem to have gone up in price with Air Transat, but some of the accomodation was booking out fast.

MillyMollyMama · 23/02/2015 16:43

Ihatethecold. There are great companies like Discover the World and Audley who put together tours with decent, non sharing, accommodation in Canada. Not sure if they are cheaper than DIY, Audley probably is not, but they have experts who really do know the accommodation options and what to see and where to go.

BeattieBow · 23/02/2015 16:47

I'd go interrailing- tickets are free for children at the moment.

Amazing places in Europe and weather good.

otherwise I'd think about india (Rajistan where it's not so rainy) - its hot but ok at this time of the year and you could head to the mountains a bit too (Ladakh/Leh).

or possibly driving across America (which is where my children want to go, desperately).

ihatethecold · 23/02/2015 16:48

Thanks. Would love a Pm.
My dh retires from the police in 2.5 years so we will have a really lovely holiday.
The kids will be 13 and 17.
I get excited just thinking about it.
I follow some photographers on Instagram who take the most amazing photos of Alberta.

Sorry for high jacking op! Blush

MamaDoGood · 23/02/2015 17:07
