Boston and East Coast - itinerary ideas

Did west coast last year. Thinking of East Coast with husband and kids in August.

Anyone done it and have advice and favourite stops etc? Also how much did you spend roughly. We might go for 3 weeks.

Depends what you fancy. Lot of options in the North East.

If you were happy to fly in and out of Boston you could spend a bit of time in the city, then have a bit of a road trip. Mount Washington in New Hampshire & Shelbourne Museum in Vermont are favs of mine. You could do a circular route back through Maine and into Boston.

Alternatively you could go south - Rhode Island, the Cape etc. Martha's Vineyard is lovely, and the little gingerbread cottages are super cute.

If you wanted to fly into Boston and out of somewhere else you could take the train to NYC for a stop, then Philly, and even DC. Train was quite fun.

I think you've got to work out what you're interested in to narrow down the options Smile

We had a few days in Boston (which I loved) then went south via Plimouth, visited Plimouth Plantation, which was very interesting, then down to cape cod for a few days in Hyannis, which was also great - it was a few years ago now so I can't help with the money side

We nearly made the trip 14 years ago but it got cancelled because of 9/11. I have a vague want to see Boston, and Martha's Vineyard and Cape Cod (I'm a big Jaws fan!).

My husband and I did a 3 week east coast trip 2 years ago ( no kids though). We included New York as well so the first week was city based (NYC & Boston). Loved NYC; Boston was interesting, but a couple of days there was enough. The second week we spend on Cape Cod, which was wonderful. Amazing beaches, really cute towns, fantastic seafood, whale watching etc. The towns all have slightly different personalities so you can pick a base town that suits what you like and explore the others from there. There is a great old drive-in cinema at Wellfleet which shows films all summer and Provincetown is the best for whale-watching. For the last week we drove up to Maine and spend a couple of days in Portland (lovely) and the rest in Acadia National Park (sort of a small Yosemite by the sea). It then took us 2 days to drive back to NYC (via a few detours-we visited a couple of historic diners/buildings on the way as we love Americana). It was a fab trip. If you’ve done the west coast before I would budget similarly. We found it slightly cheaper than west coast. The flights were much cheaper, and so was accommodation (apart from NYC). Have a fab trip!

Catgames, that sounds perfect! We did NY last year at the end of our West Coast trip and we all loved it. Love the sound of the drive in, whale watching and the mini Yosemite (the real one last year was one of our highlights). If you remember any other tips please share!

We are planning East Coast for next Summer, Boston then Cape Cod for beaches, whale watching and bike riding. It looks amazing but so many towns to choose from on Cape. So prob stay in 2 diff places to avoid too much driving.. Sounds like roads v busy in August! Smile

I visited Boston 4 years back and it was just amazing. We drove out to Providence (pretty), and whilst in Boston we went to the Museum of Fine Arts and also the Isabella Stewart Gardner museum which is the best museum I've been to, and I love me a good museum.

Boston is amazing, we went last year and loved it. Walked miles, saw all the sights and ate, ate, ate!

We started off in Washington DC then travelled up by train to Boston which was great

We only had a week in New England one autumn, but we packed a lot in. We only had a day in Boston, but didn't feel we had missed out. We went to Plimouth then drove inland and visited Old Sturbridge Village before going staying in Lenox for the night. We went to Hancock Shaker Village and then on to Weston in Vermont before driving over to Salem, where there was loads to see and do, especially as it was coming up to Halloween. We couldn't get anywhere to stay in Salem so we stayed in Marblehead.

It was a bit of a whistlestop trip, but we enjoyed every minute of it, except for one night in a seedy motel in Maine.
