Would you book a holiday to Greece for the summer?

I already have so a bit late to be worried now but anyway. How do you think the economic situation could effect us? I have booked an all inclusive with a small travel operator and do have travel insurance.

yes, and I have done

what exactly are you concerned about ?

CiderwithBuda · 17/02/2015 23:48

We have too. Going to Northern Greece to a resort we have been to many times before. Easyjet flights and direct booking with hotel. I am assuming they will be very glad of tourists. As they always are.

fakenamefornow · 18/02/2015 09:37

Greek airline going bust, limited availability of food/drinks at hotel, no/limited staff at the hotel all because there is no money to pay them. I've never been to Greece before, but I have been to a lot of third world countries, problem is Greece isn't set up as a third world country so seem to be running a first world economy on a third world budget, something's got to give. Also they seem to be heading into uncharted territory, nobody seems to be able to predict what will happen. I know nothing about economics though.

I suppose the tourist industry might be a little safer because whatever happens it will be earning overseas income.

we went when they had riots and an earlier economic meltdown. the main land was experiencing lots of power cuts. apart from one very short power cut - and lets face it you get those in greece anyway - you would never have known. i can't see the resorts wanting this to affect them or the tourists that bring their areas lots of cash

SooticaTheWitchesCat · 18/02/2015 10:29

We are in the process of planning our holiday to Greece at the moment, we will be flying with Easyjet so have no worries about airlines going bust and we are going to an island resort so I see no problems there.

AnyFucker · 18/02/2015 10:36

I can tell you have never been to Greece before.

I suggest you try it, and knock those ill conceived presuppositions into a cocked hat

Branleuse · 18/02/2015 10:47

im tempted to support greece more than ever actually

AnyFucker · 18/02/2015 10:50

Me too

I love that country and it's people

Chewbecca · 18/02/2015 10:52

We're going to Greece too & I'm not worried. Flying with BA so no issues there. I think flying with a Greek airline is v unusual?

Agree they need the custom & I would be very surprised if the holiday areas were affected in any way.

TheRollingCrone · 18/02/2015 10:55

I've booked, I,d rather spend my money with the Greeks than anyone at the moment tbh.

I,m going to Kos. I'll swim to Turkey if the going gets rough Grin.

AnyFucker · 18/02/2015 10:56

Turkey ?

You don't wanna do that ! .... Wink

TheRollingCrone · 18/02/2015 11:03

Grin AnyFucker.

I,ve got no sense of direction, I,d probably end up in Libya!

chillybits · 18/02/2015 11:04

We've just booked to go to Greece. Am so excited! Things can go a bit wrong anywhere in the world.

Yes me too, that's (partly) why we are going there for the first time.

The Greek Isles are amazing and I won't stop until I have experienced the lot of them. I love the idea that they are trying to ban AI resorts as I think they make the islands lose their charm.

Smurfingreat · 18/02/2015 11:49

Already have booked my holiday. I used to live in Greece and still go back every year. Tourism is essential to the Greek economy and they need the money more than ever.

AnyFucker · 18/02/2015 11:52

me too, BB

I am glad Greece has never really fully embraced the AI thing.

it's one thing to say that you want your holiday money to in some small way contribute to the local economy

but if you book an AI holiday you are more than likely simply lining the pockets of some Russian oligarch

go self catering in locally owned places, use the family-run eating and drinking establishments

thankfully, there are still plenty of them in Greece and the prices are still reasonable if you choose wisely

chillybits · 18/02/2015 11:57

Yes AI usually means money is wafted out of the local economy into some international chain.

specialsubject · 18/02/2015 12:15

yes. BUT the Greeks are going to try and stop AI for the reasons AF outlines. Plus you rarely get decent food at an AI and it stops you seeing the area!

so do your research, find a place with a village/town with restaurants and shops, and eat like the locals do. Far tastier anyway.

Iflyaway · 18/02/2015 21:08

PP talks about power cuts in Greece. Yes, it's possible nowadays... but I have never seen it happen yet in all my years there.

Been going to Greece independently since the late 70s showing my age now

Absolutely love it! Still authentic where you can stay locally, so many islands to choose from!

It's about the only authentically non-big-business place left in Southern Europe.
And they need our patronage!

Also, leave any trainers/clothes etc. with reception when you leave, they will know where they are needed. And fill your suitcase with olive oil, local herbs from the market - Oregano, Thyme, etc. - soap, and lovely stuff for the house (ceramics, etc.).

NoBloodyMore · 18/02/2015 21:31

Yes I'm getting married there in August, I love Greece and have no worries about the holiday, was a tiny bit peeved I can't take advantage of the euro exchange rate at the minute as I'm not sure what the currency will be but we have plenty of time.

girlywhirly · 19/02/2015 12:30

When we go to the Greek islands on holiday we have B&B and eat out as well as going to bars locally. All the tavernas have daily specials and often home cooked food if family run. Sometimes they grow their own veg and fruit which they serve.

We buy things in the shops, go on locally run excursions etc. Where we have stayed, a lot of the hotel staff work there for the season before returning to the mainland to their main place of residence.

There was a power cut in Kefalonia two years ago, but that was down to a storm.

I would like to know what's happening with the currency before June though!

EveDallas · 19/02/2015 12:37

We are going to Greece (Kos) this summer and I am very happy about it. We are going AI (which we always do) to a 4* hotel that has had great Trip Advisor reviews for the last few years.

I don't do a Self Catering or isolated villas etc so I'm very glad with what we have chosen. I can't wait. My only worry is that it won't be as good as our last couple of holidays to Egypt - DD will crucify me Smile
