Would love any ideas and suggestions for a first holiday for my husband and I and our little one who will be 3 months old in July when we are thinking of a weeks holiday somewhere. Open to short haul or uk ideas? We love travelling abroad and want to continue this with children but open to uk options with a small baby if this is a better option?? Ideas and advice please!!! We went to a villa in Spain when ds was 3m. Really chilled out and just played in the pool, napped (all of us lol), walked with the pushchair. Ate in and out and DH had a few drinks in local bars, the Spanish think this is perfectly normal as everyone does it. None of the British nonsense of all kids out by nine!
It was lovely and ds is a seasoned traveller at 6 Grin

I agree with the posters who say it's the best time to travel with a child - a sling or baby carrier will be very handy, it was for us. If you're bottle feeding you probably won't find it easy but if you're breastfeeding the world's your oyster! I have some friends travelling through the US right now (road trip) with a 2 month old and they're having a wonderful experience. Good luck and enjoy Smile

It looks to me that all the posters saying 'no way would I do that' haven't actually done much travelling with little ones!
OP, I've travelled fairly extensively with my now 3yo. With hindsight, the easiest trip we did was long haul at 3mo. Breastfed so no worries about food. She slept most of the way in the bassinet or was on our laps. It felt stressful at the time as we'd never done it before, but looking back, it was fine. So much so that we're planning long haul again when DC2 will be 2mo this year.
The most difficult age IMO is between 1-2y - still on your laps but not old enough to be distractible for long with a game/film etc. Over 2 gets easier as they get their own seat.
Don't fall in to the trap of 'I can't possibly do that, I've got a baby'. That was the best advice I was given while preg and I've stuck to it! Of course you can go long haul. Go wherever you want. Just make sure you've got your comforts at the other end, that will make life easier. Enjoy travelling! My 3yo is easily the most well travelled I have met Smile

I went to lanzarote with DS when he was 4 mo.

It was so easy. He was EBF so I literally didn't need to take a thing except nappies (I took pump and bottle but never used it) and a few toys.

He slept in my arms on the plane and was happy and content being in the pram or carrier while we carried on as normal while we were there.

We went all inclusive so didn't need to leave the hotel at night, just put DS down to sleep at the normal time, but straight into the pram, covered him with a uv/blackout pram cover and took him with us out to dinner and drinks. He never once woke up. We then just transferred him to the cot when we got back to the room.

It's the perfect age. He's 7 mo now and it would be a lot harder as he's starting to crawl and needs more entertaining, so I probably wouldn't do it again until he's over 2 and has his own seat on the plane.

I would ignore all the negative posts and go where you like. I took both my children abroad to Turkey when they were tiny, they were so much easier to take then than when they started running about. July will be very hot anywhere in Europe but September would be the perfect time to go.

We went to Amsterdam when DD was 4mo on the overnight ferry. That was really good, we had the car so no luggage worries, even took the playmat! We went to Lanzarote when she was 9mo and I ended up in a right flap about foreign water for her formula - we packed uk tap water in the end. Prob worth considering for foreign holidays, you might turn into a paranoid crazy lady like me Wink

Barcelona was fab. We stayed in an apartment, there's loys to do, the beach is nice and the people lovely.

I was tempted to move to Spain on the basis of that holiday

Def easiest age. Between 8weeks and 16weeks ds1 and 2 between them did Vietnam, Athens, Venice, Paris and Newyork.

Our best trip was ds2 to Vietnam at that age (ds1 was 18 months). It was so lovely as both could go in slings, both could breastfeed as and when, and both just go were we wanted. Dh was with me. Everyone loved the children, people helpful and happy to have children around anywhere

Worse was New York. I had to take ds1 alone at 12 weeks for 3 days to a meeting. The flights and meeting fine, but the atmosphere to small babies not as welcoming. Ie a nice restaurant said I couldn't take baby inside as was after 9pm. Mad as they he was just tucked in sling asleep.

Our only non-successful trip was southern Spain when DS was about 15m. Wouldn't eat, or sleep, got car sick on the switchback mountain roads to the white villages, refused to have anything to do with sand, the sea....

Holidays got better after that.

When our first was under one we decided France was the best option and found a lovely English family owned baby- friendly place in the south west which was drivable. We have since been 4 times and made good friends with the owners and their regular guests. We've have added to our brood in those years so it is also great for toddlers. It is called Mirabelle and is near Cognac. The website is www.mirabellegites.com I think x

That is the best time to travel with kids! Can't move, don't need food only boob..def go for it!!!
Potential for overheating would be an issue I guess so maybe avoid anywhere totally boiling..
What is your budget?

blossomblowing · 26/02/2015 20:01

another vote for caserio del mirador, really easy journey, all the gear, great food, unlimited vino, days just slip by in a haze of love and wine and sunshine.. infact might just have a look at a slot for this year right now!
