Portugal coast - where? Or Northwest Spain?

I'm looking at the Portuguese coast - not as far down as Algarve (think it might be too hot in July? Correct me if wrong)

There is a place called Peniche, which looks nice and quiet, though it seems to be a 'surf-town'. So is it full of young guys with dreads ? We'd fly to Lisbon and drive.

Where should I go - that's within an hour of an airport, on the beach and not too hot? And I'm only looking for B&B, not all-inc.

Am also looking at north portugal/north-west Spain (from Santiago de Compostela I guess) or Porto. What are the beaches like? The Weather?

Don't go to anywhere surfy unless you like surf! Imho Grin

There's a reason why the waves are big, it's bloody windy. We stayed in Cascais, on the west coast in the full force of the Atlantic winds. In July. We nearly got blown away.

Well I've booked a long weekend in Cascais end of this month! I hope it's not too windy (I wear contact lenses and I'm not good in the wind)

Mary - how easy is it to get from the airport to the town? The hotel want 45euro each way for a transfer (so, a taxi then? Hmm) - must be public transport?

Glad you've got it booked up, hope you have a great time

Here's some info on getting there by train www.cascais-portugal.com/Guides/Lisbon-Airport-to-Cascais-mob.php
