hiya

we are looking to go to the canary islands in may half term, don't mind which island we go to but want to find a smallish hotel near the beach but that also has really nice restaurants to eat at near by. any suggestions where best to go please? we went to plays des inglas two years ago and although the hotel was lovely the local "shops" & places to eat only offered egg and chips type stuff...ty

We are going to Lanzarote for easter. Staying in Playa Blanca, we've been time and time again and it's lovely, plenty of hotels near the beach, really family orientated and lots of lovely restaurants and cafes by the sea in easy walking distance.
Also only a 4 hr flight, sometimes only 3.5 hrs on a good flight.

I quite fancy the Canaries this year. Can anyone recommend a really nice child friendly hotel?

Agree that Playa Blanca in Lanzarote is not too 'chips and egg' type of place. Couple of nice beaches, some good restaurants and bars. Quite relaxed.

Tenerife - try Puerto de Santiago, los Gigantes or Puerto de la Cruz. PDLC in particular is very different to the brits abroad type place. But no beaches particularly :)

Fuerteventura ? Nice beaches on the island. I have twice stayed in Costa Caleta (also knownas Caleta de Fuste) . It's fairly laid back - a few bars and restaurants. The south coast Jandia is also nice. Corralejo on the north is very scenic, big sand dunes etc but a little livelier, more touristy. But still not lairy and loud imo.

Is it tricky to find a family hotel that's not in a loud touristy place?

Puerto mogan, Gran Canaria.

Hi, I am also looking for advice on where to go on the Canary Islands that is a) reasonably priced, b) not too "egg and chips" touristy, and c) has either a hotel with a decent pool or a beach nearby. No kids so don't want anywhere overrun with them!

TheFairyCaravan · 03/02/2015 15:04

grumasaur in your position I wouldn't bother with the Canaries I'd go for Cape Verde. DH and I went to Boa Vista last year and it was beautiful and so relaxing. The hotels are usually all inclusive and there isn't really anything to buy so you don't spend anything while you're there.

We only paid £200 more than the holiday we originally found in Lanzarote.

My suggestion for OP would be El Medano in Tenerife. There is a small hotel right on the beach and plenty of decent, reasonable restaurants on the doorstep. Very very laid back and Spanish resort, you'll have a lovely relaxing break x

Lanzasur club hotel in Playa Blanca is a good one, I would say for both kids and no kids. There just built themselves a new water park but instead of it being like a normal hotel then have little chalets so you can be private with your own living space as well as hotel half/full board benefit a. 5 minute walk to the beach and 10 minute walk along the front to bars, restaurants, shops and cafes too. Not as touristy as many other resorts on the island.

For higher price there is also a nice hotel just around the corner (closer to the sea front) called the Timanfaya palace and its adults only.

These are really great suggestions, thanks all! can anyone recommend a good website where I can look for cheap deals (eg where it is all included)?

Carol87 · 03/02/2015 22:05

If you mean all inclusive with food then I've found booking.com to be as reasonable as anywhere.

If you mean flights & transfers (which I think you do) I always find travel supermarket a good place to start and then it gives you a few options to start off.

I hope you all find what you're after and have a great holiday.

LexieH · 03/02/2015 22:08

Mrs S28 what is the name of that hotel please? x

I think MrsS28 might mean this one, Hotel Medano. It's right on the beach.

I stayed there many, many years ago so no idea what it's like nowadays but I have been back to the town to visit over the last few years and the town is lovely.

Thanks Carol!

I normally book everything individually myself, thinking it will save money and give me more choice. However then I end up spending more on the little things... So wanted to see if doing it this way works out any better at all.

Also just want a cheap, easy, relaxing holiday so not too worried about much except for a pool and some local cuisine near by!
