Turkey in August - Too hot?

I'm looking at a family activity holiday that involves some hiking in the mountains, as well as canoeing and other water sports. Mediterranean coast.

We haven't been abroad much with DC because it means going in August and I'm not very good with the heat. Brochure says August temp 24-30 which doesn't sound that bad, but what kind of heat is it? Is the a breeze etc? DC are 11 & 13 and ginger, so obviously we need to be careful with the sun but I think our colouring means we feel the heat more than people with more sun tolerant skin IYSWIM

I went to Turkey in August (Istanbul and Bodrum). Istanbul was ok but Bodrum was very hot. I'm fair and not great in the heat. Maybe it's cooler where you're going in the mountains? I went for a day trip to Ephesus and it was nearly unbearable.

In my experience it is usually hotter than it says in the brochure. I went to Turkey in July and it was over 30 degrees. If you are in the mountains it will probably be cooler but I would think it will still be too hot to do much activity. I don't mind hot if you can dip in the pool constantly.

Last time I went to turkey in august it was 45 degrees Shock but that was during a heatwave! As far as I know it can get above 30 in June, so as a non lover of heat i would avoid it in august.

there should be a breeze by the sea but local weather systems can kill it.

in short, Southern Med in August is not the place for you. Holidays are supposed to be fun!

Not only is it very hot but it is also very humid - which makes the heat even more difficult to cope with.

I go to Turkey every year, but would not go from mid June until early September beacuse of the heat.

Italy gets over 30 degrees in August. Turkey is much hotter than Italy.

If you want warm to no too hot weather you would be better off going to North west Spain or the Atlantic coast of Portugal. Or perhaps you could consider Slovenia.

Blimey that brochure is so wrong. We went last week in May and it was 30 degrees. In August it will be 40 degrees plus. I would look at one of the islands so at least you might get a breeze. The canary islands might fit the bill or the Balearics.

RubberBulletKisses · 23/01/2015 08:51

When we went to Turkey in August it was 37-40+. This was in Old Deniz a few years ago. it was humid too. I wouldn't recommend it!

HazleNutt · 23/01/2015 08:53

24-30? Not likely. August is more likely to be absolutely roasting.

CitronVert · 23/01/2015 08:59

We went to Turkey a couple of years ago. We too had to go in school hols so chose the last two weeks (flew back on 30th) as we thought it would be marginally cooler.

It was 34-40 degrees every day. This was no problem as the hotel had a/c so we just went up to our room for a snooze or went for a walk in the shade. However, it was very much a relaxing holiday for us so we spent most of the time relaxing and swimming in the pool, and there were lots of indoor activities for the kids when it got too hot. I think it would have been more difficult if we'd got hikes or other sporty activities planned.

We stayed near Antalya so other places may be a bit different.

We went to Turkey in August 2013 and it was mid 40s, absolutely roasting and energy sapping heat. Fab for swimming in the sea, splashing about in the pool and reading in the shade, but there is no way any of us could have hiked up a mountain. I found browsing around the shops hard work in that heat! This was along the coast from Bodrum.

Kim82 · 23/01/2015 09:11

I went in June last year and it got to 42 degrees at one point. It is very hot and the temperatures rise from June to August.

SooticaTheWitchesCat · 25/01/2015 19:22

Turkey gets very hot in August, usually mid 30s at least, it is 24-30 degrees in May. I used to live in Bodrum and there is no way I would go hiking anywhere in that heat in August.

CPtart · 25/01/2015 19:41

We've done Turkey twice in August. Very hot. Ok when round the pool but even walking from a to b was an effort. Ephesus nearly finished us off!
