Germany - Grimm bros trail, castles, the Rhine.....near Frankfurt

posted before about a family celebration being held near Frankfurt. turns out it's in Rudesheim. have now booked return flights from Frankfurt for two weeks. now need to decide what to do with a nearly 5 and 3 year old.

saw something for a touring holiday following the Grimm brothers tales, or castles on the Rhine etc. planning to not travel too far, stay three, or max four different places over 12 nights and explore where we're based, be it river, forest, castle, other. heard it's wine region but maybe that's wishful thinking Grin

does this sound feasible? what's accommodation like in Germany for beginning of August - essential to book in advance? short term let's, hotels or apartments?

any advise much appreciated, thank you Smile

The Rhine is one of the worlds most stunning places Grin The stretch between Koblenz and rudesheim is not very long and there is masses to see and do.

Def need a hire car. The trains are good but you'll never get to the castles without driving.

Consider staying in St Goar or St Goarhausen. Lots of hotels, it's where the Lorelei Rock is and the views from both sides of the river are amazing (2 min car/pedestrian ferry from one side to the other)

Google "Rhine castles" and you get a map showing all the sites and history and visiting info.

Take a boat trip (North to South), the boats make lots of stops between Koblenz and Boppard so you can do as long or short a trip as you want. The railway runs alongside the river so you can do a boat one way then take the train back.

Loads of vineyards and wine tasting all along the river!

Koblenz is fascinating - take cable car across river to old fortress with amazing views. Very cheap gelato icecream there too!

Any more info, please message me! We camped, rather than hotel, but I have lots of details and photos of the places we visited, happy to share Smile

pinkpanda - thank you so much, that's exactly what I needed to know. I will definitely pm you when I start making some plans. I love the idea of camping, presume the campsites are better than the uk ones, maybe on a par with French ones? would love some recommendations.
thank you again

When I was a child about the same age as yours are now I used to love going on the Moby Dick boat (shaped like a whale) and I think it still runs. You could catch it up to Königswinter where there is an Aquarium and you can catch a train up the Drachenfels. They used to do great waffles up there but not sure what is there now.

Have a look and see if there are any farms holidays in the area. We did on a bit further over from that region when the children were little and it was great value for money.
