European destination that's not ridiculously hot in August?

We have been to Lisbon and Paris when it has neared 40 degrees but could do with finding somewhere interesting and not so hot. We are stuck with August school holidays.
Wanted to go to Southern Spain - Seville and around but I think it will be too hot to do it justice.
Have adventurous kids of 11 and 7. We enjoy cities and culture with a bit of beach.

Biarritz? Bordeaux city stay and then onto beach at Arcachon.

France? The Vendee or Brittany are both lovely

If you can cope with lakes instead of sea try southern Germany. The area around Berchtesgaden/Königssee is stunningly beautiful and there's plenty to do. You can get the bus to Salzburg easily too.

I second Squidgy's suggestion of southern Germany. Also: Austria, Slovenia, Atlantic coasts of Spain or Portugal, France.

Another vote for Southern Germany - how about wonderful Lake Constance? Lake, mountains, lots to do - we stayed in the town of Constance itself and you can walk to Switzerland in ten minutes, visit Austria by boat and Liechtenstein by train and bus. Four countries for the price of one!

We had a great August holiday in the Austrian mountains, near to Zell am See. Lots of lovely swimming lakes, Alpine slides and even glacier skiing.

We've been to Dordogne in France a number of times - although last year it was a tad chillier than we like, usually it is a pleasant 25-30 degrees.
They have river beaches and loads of things to do, canoeing, castles, caves, it's a fantastic place.
