We are thinking about going to NY in the new year to visit family. Does anyone know what kind of things there are to do with babies there?!

Bump this for you. I've been in NY ages ago without kids.
Time out guides are v. good as they always have a chapter of things to do with kids.

It depends on how old the baby is & the time of year (you said in the New Yr but I wasn't sure if you meant you were going in January):

  • Central Park is great for running around - lots of kids stuff to do there

  • Central Park Zoo

  • If your dc is into boats, you could do the Staten Island Ferry (I think its still free but haven't done it for a while)

  • FOA Schwartz on 5th Ave is a famous toy store a bit like Hamley's

  • If you can bear it, Toys R Us in Times Square (Broadway). Apparently the largest in the world & has an indoor Ferris wheel

  • I don't know how baby friendly it is, but the Natural History Museum may be worth a visit.

There must be tons of other thinsg but I can't think of them at the moment

Hope someone else is more helpful!

The Natural History Museum is good, but as with all US museums & galleries, quite pricey, so plan to stay for a few hours.

There is a great selection of museums, galleries, shops and shows.
It is VERY cold in winter with a biting wind so wrap up really well.
Also, make sure that you have really good medical insurance - there are a few threads on here suggesting different companies. I had a medical epic with DS there earlier this year.

There are outdoor ice rinks in Central Park and at the Rockerfeller Centre - I know it's impossible with a baby but fun to watch! I agree about the zoo and the ferry. The other thing I loved was the Empire State Building at night - it's open 'til midnight and you miss all the queues after 9pm.

Whatever you do, have a lovely time. It's so much more fun when you visit family.

How old is your LO? We were there in the summer with our 2 (5 and 3 at that point) so can help if you need.

Don't recommend getting their head stuck in the railings in Central Park...

We just got back from there with our 3 year old and 9 month old. Our DS had his 3rd birthday there.

We did Central Park and the zoo which he loved. He also enjoyed looking out for all the squirrels in the park.

On his birthday we went to the Natural History Museum as he's really into dinosaurs just now and he had an absolute ball!

We also did the Staten Island ferry (yes it is still free) and went up the Rockefeller Centre though to be honest he didn't get too much out of that.

You must go to Toys R Us - we were staying right next to Times Square so were in it several times. They have an enormous moving T Rex and of course the ferris wheel.

We were given a tip from a friend for a place to take DS for his birthday meal - Mars 2112 at Times Square. Standard American food but the whole place done out as if you're on Mars with guys walking round dressed as aliens etc. Pretty naf for adults but DS loved it and his eyes were out on stalks when the 'Martians' were walking around.

Mostly we just walked around taking in the atmosphere and he seemed to love the hustle. We ventured on the Subway once but we were with locals so it was easy and there were plenty of spare hands to help us with the pushchair etc.

Obviously our 9 month old DD didn't get a whole lot out of the trip but then again she didn't complain much either so I guess she enjoyed the experience.
