Where do you recommend in Portugal?

Quite fancy Portugal this year for a summer holiday. The beaches look stunning and I hear good things about it.

We are a family of four (2 girls 8&9). My preference would be self catering but somewhere with some facilities i.e. pool. close to some bars, restaurants. Not too 'resort'-ish. But open to suggestions!

Could you just tell me what 'resort owned' means? Sorry, I'm not familiar with that phrase.

Just that on monte dourado, most of the apartments are privately owned, but a few are still owned by the development - and IMHO the privately owned ones are nicer, in better locations (better views etc) and most have been renovated with new furnishings
