Travelling with kids - how much extra stuff do you now have to take?

When you travel with kids (specifically babies and toddlers), how much extra stuff do you end up taking with you and how often have you had to pay for excess baggage? How many bags do you typically take with you for a holiday?

Is it just me or is it ludicrous how much stuff you have to take?

Do you have a trip booked? There are lots of tricks to reduce your baggage, try this site \link{http://www.travellingwithchildren.co.uk/here}
Personally i travel very light if i can.

Joshandjamie,

We are just coming to the end of a 6 month round the world trip with DS1 (5) and DS2 (2).

Our checked luggage has never weighed any more than 35kgs between us and we have an allowance of 80.

We travel with a carseat but did not travel with a travel cot because they weigh at least 10kgs which is a big chunk of weight allowance.

Our other bulky travel item was/is nappies for DS2. We're off to Cambodia next week so we've stockpiled as I am sure we wont get any decent disposables there.

This is what we travel with:

1 Backpack
1 Suitcase on wheels
1 baby backpack
1 lightweight buggy (maclaren volo < 6lbs)
1 carseat
4 x hand luggage (including camera bag, nappy/utility bag, DS1's bag and DS2's roll-around bag)

We have at times also travelled with an assortment of really bulky wooden souveneirs from Fiji.

So yes a lot more than before kids, but nothing that requires additional payment or that is not manageable with two parents and a luggage trolley.

HTH
