Snowy city break in December - where shall we go?!

Post Christmas, no kids. Fancy a cold, snowy city so we have an excuse not to do any sightseeing. And stay in bed a lot.

Does anyone know if Croatia is always snowy in winter, or is it a bit hit and miss?

TIA

Not sure about Croatia but here in Budapest you may or may not get snow. Our first year here we didn't have snow till late Jan but last year we had snow in Nov. None over Xmas though but one day of snow on 27th - I remember cos my family were here).

Even if no snow it can be cold enough to watn to stay in bed and only venture out for hot wine!

St Petersburg? Moscow? Oslo?
Did all three pre-kids and loved them all. and LOTS ofsnow

Frizombie · 09/10/2006 20:54

Tallin sounds like a good bet

Would you recommend it for a 3 day break? Isn´t it famous for public bathy thingies (oooh, my way with words)? Like the idea of spa-y type things....

Loads of suggestions now - thanks all!!

Out of your three prufrock, which would you choose? Like the sound of all three.....

Going to go and look at Tallin too (on the puter, not in person obviously). Have you been?

If you don't want to do sightseeing I would say Oslo. Dh and I used to judge cties on whether we would move there if he got offered a job and I loved Oslo so much I even looked into learning Norwegian!

It's cold, quite small, nothing that you "have" to see so you don't feel like you are missing out if you stay in bed. Some v. good restaurants as well.

V. easy to get around on tram/trains. Viggerand (sp) park with amazing sculptures is a great place to go for a walk and some very fresh air. And you have to go to the Olympic ski jump place just outside of town - you can climb up a rickety staircase to the very top and have amazing views over pristine countryside, all within a 20 minute train journey of the centre of town.

Only downside is taht alcohol is outragously expensive, so take some dutyfree.

Salzburg or one of the spas in Austria you can reach by RyanAir to Graz eg. www.blumau.com Fantastic value for money - book up as it will be peak season!

Reykjavik? Not even much in the way of daylight, so definitely no reason to go out.

Pollybloodyanna · 09/10/2006 21:25

We went to St Petersburg in December once - it was lovely. (and snowy)

Saker · 09/10/2006 22:22

We visited Prague in December and it was beautiful although that was about 13 years ago so it might have changed a lot. There is quite a lot to see though so less excuse to stay in.

Innsbruck is pretty and would have snowy mountains all around. There is a Christmas market and it hosts Ski Jumping after Christmas.

lapsedrunner · 10/10/2006 19:18

Most cities in snowy locations tend to be so well cleared of snow that you would be better heading for a rural "snowy" location. i.e. you won't actually see much snow on the ground in the city centre!

MadameMorticiaMills · 10/10/2006 19:36

What about Stockholm? Relatively small city centre, squillions of cosy candle lit cafes, outdoor skating rink, just really beautiful in the snow, and although it is a city, there should be plenty of snow.
And they have just reorganised the tunnelbana fares, making it relatively cheap to travel about.

chocolatequeen · 11/10/2006 12:53

Thanks for all your suggestions - am going to put them on a list for DH to peruse....

Much as I love Stockholm, snow can't be absolutely guaranteed. I'd still go as it's a wonderful place and you may well be lucky. Same for Oslo.

Vienna, Berlin, Oslo.

We are going to Reykjavik this New Year. God help us.
