Hi

We're planning this for end Oct/early Nov.

Anyone got any advice on the following:

flights: into JFK or Newark or La Guardia - what's easiest? where to get cheap flights for a monday departure from London and Friday evening return.

accomodation: looking for a studio appt with kitchen type accomodation

Will the Xmas decorations be out early November?

TIA, I'm on a strict budget otherwise DH won't let us go!!!

Can help with the flights - would suggest you look into flying into Newark rather than JFK as Newark has better transport facilities (you can get a train directly in to Manhattan from Newark.
Have a look at what's being offered by BA and Virgin (you may find that BA will be cheaper). Do not use a US based carrier.

La Guardia is a no no from the UK as this airport is only used for US domestic flights.

You must ensure your child has his/her own passport. He/she will end up being on your lap for the duration of the flight (children under 2 do not have their own seat).

i've found what looks like a good flight with BA into Newark but out of JFK but it's the dates we want so.......

JFK is fine - you can get a shuttle type thing (although they may not accept a child without a car seat) or a taxi to Manhattan- check on the JFK website for ground transportation for different options. Don't get there too early for your flight home. It is the WORST international airport ever and there is absolutely nothing to do once you have gone through security (& not much before then either).

If you fly BA and don't book a seat for your LO (you can book them a seat if under 2 but BA charge 80% of the adult fare, and if there are 2 adults flying, you may be ok having dc on your lap. If over 2, will need own seat), call them once you've made your booking. They can arrange seats in the bulkhead for you where they can provide a sky cot or seat for children and you get a little bit more legroom for sitting, stretching & crawling around.

As for accomodation, I would look around Times Square. There are lots of reasonably priced hotels (well, reasonable for NY) and it's a very family oriented area. There are places like Doubletree Suites hotels which will have all the facilities you need.

I've been at the end of October a few times and the shops were just putting out the xmas decorations. Try Bloomingdales & Macy's. I don;t think the street decorations were out though. If you have kids, you may want to check out FAO Shwartz on 5th by Central Park and Toys R Us on Broadway @ 42nd-ish. It's the biggest one in the world and has an indoor ferris wheel. HAving written this, I think I'd probably avoid it - it gets packed but might be fun with your dc.

We spent a lot of time in Manhattan as we lived v close so if you need any other info, I may be able to help. Or not. But I'll try!

hi

thanks for the advice and tips.

we just got invited to a wedding in NZ in March 2007 so all bets are off for NYC anytime soon

But I WILL get there again one fine day so your info is stored away for future reference.

There is a terrific Comfort Inn right off Times Square on 42nd St. The last time we stayed there it was about $150/night.
