Hand baggage restrictions - UK airports

I didn't see any other postings of the new flight restrictions for hand baggage so i thought i would post this here from BA's website. Flying out to the states on Holloween so my fingers are crossed that nothing happens between now and then. Because I will have a very grumpy toddler on a ten hour flight if he can't have his favorite stuffed cat and cars.

British Airways

Revised Hand baggage restrictions for UK departing flights
British Airways is implementing revised measures, introduced by the UK government's Department for Transport, with effect from Friday September 22, 2006.

The new measures allow all air travellers departing from a UK airport to carry onboard ONE larger industry standard-sized bag, no bigger than 56cm x 45cm x 25cm.

Please note:Other bags, such as handbags, may be carried WITHIN the single item of cabin baggage.

In addition, customers who need to carry with them musical instruments may now carry them through security search provided they can be x-rayed.

Restrictions still apply on items allowed through security carried in a cabin bag.

The following items must NOT be carried in the cabin bag:

Liquid cosmetics
All toiletries
All liquids
All drinks
Cigarette lighters must not be carried through security. They may be purchased airside and carried onto an aircraft on the person, except for flights to the USA. They must not be carried in a cabin bag.

Items previously prohibited in cabin baggage, such as sharp objects, should not be carried onboard.

Cabin bags MAY contain the following:

Electronic equipment, including laptops, mobile phones, MP3 players, portable music and DVD players, digital and film cameras, video cameras.
Essential medicines in liquid form, in quantities of less than 50ml.
Baby milk and liquid baby food (the contents of each bottle MUST be tasted by the accompanying guardian.)
Solid cosmetics.

Other items normally carried in cabin baggage, such as books, medicines in non-liquid form, keys, and travel documents may be carried in the cabin bag, as long as they fit into a bag no bigger than 56cm x 45cm x 25cm.

Pushchairs and walking aids, including wheelchairs are permitted but must be security screened.

To help progress through the airport all customers are asked to adhere to the restrictions. Failure to do so will significantly delay the security screening process and inconvenience other travellers.

Customers whose bags exceed the permitted dimensions will be asked to check them in and prohibited items will be confiscated by the airport security team,

Electronic equipment such as laptops will be required to be removed from hand baggage and screened separately. We recommend these items be packed carefully for easy removal at the security search point.

Customers may purchase any item in store in the departure lounge before departing their final UK airport and take onto the aircraft as normal.

I wonder if you are allowed playdough? Happy Traveling everyone

Does that mean I can take my lipstick, mascara and blusher? Lost without them ,sad isn`t it?

VeniVidiVickiQV · 05/10/2006 00:01

No, triplets - they will confiscate if not packed into the suitcase/hold.

BUT, in larger airports, there are usually a boots etc where you can, if desperate, buy what you need once through the bag check/security, from the shops at the departure lounge. They will allow this to be taken on. So they told me.

When I flew 2 weeks ago, they confiscate a lipgloss I had forgotten was in my handbag, and a pack of baby food that they confiscated despite my willingness to taste it in front of them. They also confiscated a pot of Sudocream (large one at that), i also offered to taste that so as not to lose it but to no avail

However, and I know im going to sound really careless, but, anyway, they MISSED the tube of Eurax itch cream I had forgotten was in my bag, AND they MISSED the nailclippers that were in my handbag. Hey ho.

triplets · 05/10/2006 00:04

Thanks for that, seems I shall just have to go au natural!

triplets · 05/10/2006 10:18

Are the rules the same on the way back?

VeniVidiVickiQV · 05/10/2006 10:45

Depends where you are flying from I suppose. On my way back from Spain, they made you remove watches etc to put through the scanning machine, but no restriction on liquids or fluids.

The USA may well have different restrictions. Its worth checking with the airport itself.

The Transportation Security Administration in the USA and the Canadian Air Transport Security Authority have relaxed the restrictions on the carriage of liquids through airport security check points on flights departing the USA and Canada. The changes, which are effective from September 26, 2006 allow customers to take with them in their cabin bag limited quantities of certain liquids, gels and aerosols, including travel-size toiletries such as shampoo, suntan lotion, creams, toothpaste, hair gel, hair spray and beverages.

Liquids must not exceed quantities of more than three American ounces or 90ml.

All toiletries and liquids must be carried in a separate clear plastic, zip-top bag that does not exceed 20cm x 19.5cm or 8 inches x 7.5 inches. Items must fit in the bag comfortably and the bag must be completely closed.

At the security check-point, the plastic bag must be removed from the cabin bag and x-ray screened separately.

Customers may now take onboard with them liquid items purchased in the airport once they have cleared security.

Customers carrying liquids with them may be subject to secondary searches before boarding.
