Poppies at the Tower - Have you been and how do I get there from Kings Cross?

Is it as simple as getting the tube, getting off the tube and a 1 minute walk? Also do you just view them from the outside?

From Kings Cross you can get the Northern line to Monument and then walk from there or get on the circle line and get out at Tower Hill - it's a 2 minute walk from there.

You can see them without having to pay to go into the Tower, you can walk round the pathway on the outside and see them. They do look amazing - was there last week.

hulahoopsilove · 27/10/2014 15:56

thank you mostly...my friend said it was "a real trek and long journey"!!!

I'm going Monday next week. From kings x. So yes, short tube ride and short walk. Then over the river to have a look round Borough market. Can't wait.

hulahoopsilove · 27/10/2014 15:58

ooo how do you get to Borough market ... it's just me and my ds age 9 going...would he like the market?

VivaLeBeaver · 27/10/2014 16:01

I've never been to the market, not sure if an 11yo would like it. I'm guessing its just stalls of food so maybe not. You just walk over a bridge, think Tower bridge and it looks maybe 5 mins walk the other side.

Pootles2010 · 27/10/2014 16:01

Just looking into this - didn't realize the 11th November is the last day - so get skates on! I think we'll go next Sunday.

DS (4) loves Borough market - lots of freebies!

hulahoopsilove · 27/10/2014 16:06

yes it's being dismantled that's whats prompted me to go this week,

Was there a couple of weeks ago and it is stunning and evocative. Got the tube to Tower Hill and it is just across the road, I was surprised at how close it was! You can see the poppies without going into the Tower itself as others have said, we went round the Tower as well as I haven't been there for years and had a great day out (even though I had forgotten just how big the Tower complex is and how many stairs!).

WhoKnowsWhereTheSlimeGoes · 27/10/2014 16:17

We went yesterday, it was absolutely heaving with people outside the tower and massive queues to go in, so we decided to do that another day but we did get a good view of the poppies. Couldn't help feeling it would have been more atmospheric on a quieter day though. We walked over from London Bridge station (via London Bridge), 20 mins or so walk.

SoldeInvierno · 28/10/2014 05:58

my 11 yo loves Borough Market. After seeing the poppies, cross the bridge and walk along the river towards your right. Pass Strada ( restaurant) and about 200 meters further you have a nice gallery with an amazing boat statue. Can't describe it but it is lovely. After that you are only a couple of minutes away from the market

noramum · 28/10/2014 08:21

We went yesterday. A great sight and I think several hundred people also thought so.

It looked like mayhem and can be a squeeze but people always moving along and let you pass.

The downside: I only found one sign explaining about it with a full size poppy to see them in detail. I would have loved some more information about the project and not just one figure how many soldiers died. I had two 7 year olds with me and had to answer lots of questions from them.

hulahoopsilove · 28/10/2014 08:47

omg Ive just seen the photos in the paper from yesterday it looks heaving...are we going to have to que and even get on the tube????

Heels99 · 28/10/2014 08:50

We want in August, wasn't busy. Is one minute from tube station at Tower Hill. Well worth going into the Tower of London much better for a kid than borough market.

hulahoopsilove · 28/10/2014 08:56

que's sound stupid my ds wont que in fact i dont think i will Ive heard the tower entry que's are over 2 hours :(

OP posts:
Heels99 · 28/10/2014 09:15

Really? We haven't ever queued more than five mins for tickets for the Tower of London and that is in school summer hols. You can book on line if you don't want to queue.

If your son doesn't like crowds or queuing though perhaps rethink the trip and go somewhere quieter.

noramum · 28/10/2014 09:39

I think it is busy at the Tower as people are combining the Tower with the Poppies, I looked into tickets but was glad we didn't get in. We have been there in the Christmas holidays and had it quite and calm.

We only went up to the moat, no need to go anywhere near the Tower itself.

Heels99 · 28/10/2014 09:44

Ok yes just seen in the news thousands are going thee to see the poppies so I wouldn't try to get into the tower there will be quieter times to go!

WhoKnowsWhereTheSlimeGoes · 28/10/2014 11:16

Didn't look at the queue for the ticket office itself on Sunday, but the queues to get in were several deep and going all the way up to the main road. The entire concourse between the moat and the ticket office was full of people.

VivaLeBeaver · 28/10/2014 11:17

I guess it'll be busy all week with it been half term.

FairyPenguin · 29/10/2014 08:15

My DC love Borough Market too. We did the same day out but in reverse (lunch at Borough Market, walked along the river, crossed Tower Bridge). Lovely walk and the poppies are stunning. Enjoy!

Delphine31 · 29/10/2014 08:24

Can I ask what will probably sound like a daft question...

I really want to see the poppies but I'll struggle with the crowds.

Are they accessible to view all the time?

Could I, for example, go at 7 o clock in the morning and see them?

WhoKnowsWhereTheSlimeGoes · 29/10/2014 08:29

Yes, you can just walk up. If you look at the aerial photo in this link Daily Mail you can see how people can just walk up from the street. I wish we'd gone at a quieter time, but not very practical as we live some way from London.

Delphine31 · 29/10/2014 08:40

Thanks for the info.

I work in London so will go in super early one day next week. It'll mean getting up at 4am but as a one off I think this will be worth the effort!

Marlinspike · 29/10/2014 08:45

I'm going down next week, and am planning to visit the "women, fashion, power" exhibition at the Design Centre, which I think is a short hop across Tower Bridge. Browsing Borough Market for lunch sounds like a fab idea!
