Yet another query about the new care seat law!

DD currently uses a booster seat. It is just the seat without any back on it. She is 4.6 yrs old . Should she really have one of the high back boosters or is her seat still ok, I can't seem to find anything definate although high back boosters seem to be recommended. But is she still legal?

High back booster . Cushion for over 6's(min 22kg).

hulababy · 02/10/2006 13:48

AFAIK she is still legal with just a cushion. However the law recommends that children under 6 should have a booster with back, as they are safer.

According to this a booster cushion seat should be used after 48lbs (3 stones) which is, apparently, approximately age 6.
However, my ds2 is 3 stones and he's only 4, but I wouldn't put him in a backless booster seat yet as I just don't think he's big enough. He has a stage 3 one that's just fine.

I was wondering this, because although I have a highback for ds(4), the childminder puts him on a booster.

Bozza · 02/10/2006 13:52

48lbs is actually nearer 3 1/2 stone.

She should have a highback until she is 22kg/48lb. She maybe this heavy but it is unlikely. My DS is 5.7 and he is 21.5kg/45lb. I have allowed him to use a backless booster on short, occasional journeys though.

It is all a bit confusing, the cynical part of me says if I go for advice at mothercare or someone they will insist that a high back is needed just so I buy one! Her cushion does say that its suitable from 15 kilos though.

Some of the high backs have been remarketed as from 18kgs ! It will take some time for the ones already in circulation to sell through. Safety wise that is the basic standard they met since they are based on Stages which now differ to the legal ones.

help - i weighed my 7 year old and she's always been a little runt and only weighs 19.8 kg which means she should be in a seat with a back, but has been on a booster "cushion" for a while now. am i breaking the law cos it says over 22kg for the cushions and she's not that (and tbh won't be for a while)am really confused by it all...

The ones with backs are safer. I think this new legislation has been badly advertised as so many people are not sure what to do. I have 3 children age 5, 3 and 1. My 5 year old is ina Maxi Cosi Rodi, the middle one is in a Recaro and the baby has a maxi cosi XP. All are fab seats and the Rodi already was suitable until 11 so will last him until he is too old for a seat. He is 3 stone 3 and the middle one is 2 stone 6.5. The baby is just under 2 stone.

hattiecake the law goes on height rather than weight so I'm not sure if you would be breaking the law. But if she is that petite is she really safe on a cushion?

LIZS · 02/10/2006 18:46

whenever we've used cushions they don't seem as stable somehow as ones with backs.
