I have always wanted to go to New York and finally we have booked the flights-yay. We are going in April. Can anyone recommend a hotel or where to stay which is fairly central?

We stayed in the Roosevelt in March which was basic but good for getting around. Have a fab time.

BellaVita · 09/10/2014 22:52

We stayed at The Waldorf. Was lovely.

What type of area would you like to stay in? There are loads of mid-priced chain hotels around Times Square, which might well be your cup of tea if you want the New York that's in the films. But it's very loud and crowded and touristy.

What's your budget?

What kind of hotels do you like?

Are you coming with kids?

The Roosevelt was lovely and a bit cheaper than some of the others. Central Station was the local shops and I was happy to let DS 13 go there on his own.

Previously stayed at the Barclay which is upmarket but not really any better than the Roosevelt.

The Casablanca. Amazing and central

Sorry I disappeared. Thanks for all the suggestions. It is just the two of us so no children Grin
Budget is not decided yet. Just want a nice hotel that is clean and in a good area to get to the tourist areas and the shops.

I don't know New York at all and have started reading a guide book so need to get further through it to have any idea at all where we want to be!!!

Off to google the hotels suggested.

I've just booked the archer hotel for me and my husband for 4 nights in March. It is a new hotel so not many reviews, but looks good to me! Previously stayed at soho grand which was amazing!! So excited to go back!!

The Library (same owners as the Casablanca I believe). Great location, small hotel, breakfast included and cheese and wine in the eve. I went pre DC's and loved it, may get the chance to go back in about 18 years!

I'm off here next week. It's the cheapest 'non shared bathroom hostel type' place to stay on Manhattan. I've stayed there before and it was perfect- literally 10 yards from the subway, safe and in a residential area 10 mins walk away from Central Park. The rooms are small but lovely beds and bathrooms.

We stayed at the Novotel in times square. It as fab to stay there and we could have a drink in the bar overlooking Broadway and Times Square.

BellaVida · 10/10/2014 19:03

Stay es at the Wyndham New Yorker a few years ago. Good location near Times Square and lots within walkable distance. At the time loads of air crew were staying. Not sure what the prices are like now though.

Seriouslyffs · 10/10/2014 19:03

Sorry it's not a hostel type- proper hotel with 24 hour reception.

lotsofcheese · 10/10/2014 19:11

We stayed in a hotel called The Distrikt, on the strength of reviews on Trip Advisor.

My DP and I recently came back from staying in New York and used air bnb. We stayed in one that was where someone else is living so it was cheaper but as we were just using it to sleep in, we didn't mind. Meant we could spend more on other things. We were a bit north although quick to get around by subway. Am already thinking about going again - we might stay in Brooklyn and have lovely views into Manhattan. And not too far to get into Manhattan. But am possibly getting ahead of myself Grin

antimatter · 10/10/2014 19:16

I was looking at air bnb for NY as well this afternoon - lots of choices!

NotMrsTumble · 10/10/2014 19:20

Hilton garden inn Chelsea was great when we stayed a few years ago. Reasonable chain, so standard of room was good (and large for nyc). Handy for 2 different subway lines too.

WeddingPlanner · 10/10/2014 19:26

We stayed at the Waldorf - the Towers side. It was fabulous. Not cheap mind.

shopalot · 10/10/2014 19:31

My husband is looking at the bnb website. Great to get a recommendation as seems too good to be true.

We stayed in airbnbs in boston, New York and Washington, D.C. and enjoyed them all. As we were staying 4 nights in New York we did go for something slightly cheaper and so shared the house but the others we did we had the whole apartment to ourselves. I really do like it - it makes me feel part of the place where we're staying and has cost less as well especially as you can eat meals there if you want.

We went to some in this country first which have also been great.

fairgroundsnack · 10/10/2014 19:50

AirBnB is fantastic!! If you want a hotel I stayed in the Omni Berkshire Place which was nice - it's in midtown which is good for getting pretty much anywhere and great for 5th Ave and Central Park. Meat packing district is trendier.

Onedropoflove · 10/10/2014 19:58

Chelsea Pines Hotel. A beautiful brown stone around the corner from where Carrie Bradshaw lived and the real one lives over the road it's amazing beautiful vibrant area. The breakfast was included, the owner bakes his own bread every day for it. It has a lovely vibe. You can buy a bottle and sit in the garden in an evening. You can walk the Highline, explore the galleries, get the subway one stop to Williamsburg and hang out with the hipsters. The subway is a minutes walk away and you can be anywhere within minutes. I'm going back next year. Can't wait!

We stayed in \link{https://m.airbnb.co.uk/listings/674896\this airbnb 1-bed in Chelsea} earlier this year

It was really handy for the subway (esp coming back!)

There are cheaper ones in Chelsea but we did like this one (it's a bit dark though - the photo is misleading. The bedroom at the far end has the only proper window)

We didn't look into hotel costs so I don't know how it compares

Cabbagesandcustard · 10/10/2014 20:11

Airbnb is technically illegal in NYC. Not saying you shouldn't do it, but just be aware. See here. We decided it was safer to spend our money on a proper hotel. I'd pick something in Chelsea or Meatpacking District, near the highline if travelling with DP. With kids it's different - the park is a big draw.

MirandaWest · 10/10/2014 21:05

I didn't realise it was illegal in New York. Ah well have done it now...
