Aparthotels... or what other type of holiday?

Help! I am driving myself mad trying to find a suitable holiday for next year and am really struggling with what type of holiday would suit us best.

For the last few years we’ve done either self-catering through Owner's Direct or Eurocamp holidays. For next year, we fancy a change (and I really would like a rest from cooking etc.).

I’ve been considering AI resorts – but the massive cost hike compared to what we’ve paid before is staggering, plus I’m not all that sure that we’d like a big resort holiday – we’re used to doing things slightly more independently and going to quieter places. Though I think somewhere that has a bit more going on for the DCs (7&5) would be good – they particularly like waterslides/splashparks etc though are a bit small still for a full on Aquamania type place.

So I was wondering if there is a happy medium – something like an Aparthotel that has the pool, splash park, possibly kids club (though not essential) to keep the DCs amused, the option of having hotel facilities when we want them, but not the huge cost/”full-on ness” [is that a word?] of AI.

Has anyone had a holiday that fits the bill? Location-wise, we’re fairly flexible. It just needs to be guaranteed sunshine, ideally near a sandy beach, and just a nice, family oriented resort. Oh, and I really don't want all 4 of us sleeping in the same room - that's perhaps one of the things that was pushing up the cost of the AI as I was only looking at places with partitioned family rooms etc.

Any ideas??

There are lots of places in Menorca that would be suitable - hotels with 1 and 2-bed apartments, pools with a few slides etc, kids club if you want to use it. The ones I was looking at had various board options, from b&b right up to all-inclusive. One thing I did work out was not to book all-inclusive with the UK tour operator - book b&b or half board and upgrade on arrival. It's cheaper to pay the hotel directly, and also you might just be able to pick and choose certain days to be all-inclusive rather than the whole of your stay.

Sorry I can't be specific, I was looking at holidays for our family of 5 - we desperately wanted to go to Puerto Pollensa in Majorca but the only 2 holiday complexes there that accommodate 5 are too far out of the resort. So I was reluctantly looking at Menorca, but my heart wasn't in it! In the end I have booked a hotel that we have been to previously in Puerto Pollensa - I have booked direct with them and they are putting an extra bed in the bedroom for us (no UK tour operator would do this!).

We have had good experiences with iberostar resorts (Palma and Malaga). Families/retired couples (ie not18-30s).

We went here a couple of times when DCs were that age and found that it worked really well as we like to go out and do things during the day but the entertainment, kids club, mini golf and pool provided a bit extra for sociable DD. The onsite and other local restaurants meant I rarely cooked and the apartments were lovely. The pool may be a bit basic for you (though Siam Park is just up the road) and it's not right on the beach but I'm sure there must be other similar set-ups in the Med and elsewhere in the Canaries.
