Irish mner's....Holiday advice for Ireland

Calling all Irish mner's or indeed anyone who can advise on Ireland for a holiday.

I used to go with my parents as a kid, usually to the south/west coast ie Achill Island, Co Mayo, Westport etc

DH & I want a holiday next year (aug) BUT as dd will be around 2 and our ds2b will then be around 6 months we decided on Ireland as we can travel by ferry and take the car iykwim.
I would love to take dh to where I used to go as a child BUT think the south/west coast will be to far travelling with 2 babies esp given then fact that most of the journey is not a road as such..(you know some irish roads )

Ideas please....where can we go where its remote(ish) but within a distance of a local spa type store, a pub/restaurant and also somewhere we can walk.We will have our car so somewhere within driving distance of things to see..
DH understands than places we used to visit in Ireland are remote but given the workload he's had this year so far this is they type of holiday he wants...

Ideas on cottage etc please..My only request is a real open fireplace..bliss....

TIA.

Hi there

I come from Co Mayo so am baised towards the West. You are correct that the roads aren't great but they are probably a lot better than you remember!
www.ireland.ie has got lots of cottages - if you were to brave the journey to the West then Westport is lovely. We travelled down from Dublin recently and the actual driving time to Belmullet (which is as far West as you can go) was just over 4 hours as the roads are quite good for over half the journey. However accomodation in August will be expensive wherever you go.

will you be travelling from rosslare or dublin?

shhhh · 29/09/2006 14:07

lw, I think we will do hollyhead to dublin..(i think thats the right crossing..) Been a long time since I went..ohhh..around 11 years..

So with that length of time nonym you are probably right, alot will have changed since then..!! Thanks for the tips. I did think about westport as I loved it there as a kid..we stayed in achill and used to travel to different places daily..I just love the whole thing about Ireland..esp the fact that it's not so modern iykwim which is a nice change from the hussle and bussle of manchester!! I also love the smell of a real fire..mmmm..!! Thats my memories of Ireland.
I will check out that website now..anyone else got any suggestions..?

Aaaah - I you'll have such fun - I love Achill - I'll be bucket and spading it not far from there in Enniscrone around that time - so we'll have to get the novena's out for a dry summer - not too soft !!

Bramshott · 04/10/2006 15:47

I'd def do Holyhead - Dublin. We go to Co Mayo most years and the N4? N6? can't remember which is so much better now than it was. Made the mistake this year of crossing to Rosslare and had to endure 6 hours of road-hell with DD whining in the back - never again! Dublin to the West is an easy 4 hrs (depending slightly on where you're to) now I think.

thanks everyone..!! I am preparing dh for what it should be like..Quiet, friendly and quite remote and the weather isn't always the best. BUT we usually love the rain esp when in bed..!!!
From what I remember, the weather is whats expected when you are in a bleak place and imo it's what makes Ireland Ireland iykwim..!! BUT when it'sunny, its sunny..!!!

DH says he's fine with all this and I hope he is as theres no going back..!

I just love everything irish about it, the food, the drinks, the booze, the fresh air, the weather oh and not forgetting the smell evrywhere of "real fires"..Did I say I love that smell..!! Suppose it reminds me of being a kid.

We will travel from Holyhead as it's the best journey, timewise and I trust you guys when you says its now a shorter trip by roads.

I WANT TO GO NOW...!!!!!!

shhhh

I hope you have a brilliant time!! and I hope there are a few peat fires burning when you come over - it it's sunny there may not be, but at least your'll have the weather!! Our own fire is burning as I write - its a cold, crisp night here in Waterford!! Your attitude is brillian!!

laurawaterford · 06/10/2006 20:48

don't no what happened to my spelling!!

shhhh · 09/10/2006 14:40

Even if it's 90 degree heat outside I WILL have the peat fire on..!!! I keep telling dh all about the bits I love about Ireland..!!

Jealous you are there now.... My parents went to move to Ireland with my dads job when I was around 12 but it fell through. Not so keen then but suppose when you are a kid you want to keep normality and not leave friends etc. Not only that but I wouldn't have met my dh..! ..!!!
