going to ibiza in 2 weeks time, dont really want to take my pushchair for my 4mth old, would rather hire one, but what if they dont do them for babies that young

has anyone been to ibiza, escada, and if so have you hired a puschair or seen suitable ones for 4mth old

if i take my own, would i have to count that as part of my luggage allowance?

Buggies normally go free, and sometimes travel cots too, but do check with airline as low cost ones can be a pita.

thanks, will check with travel agents tomorrow,

i think i may have posted this in wrong section so will copy and paste it on the general advice section of travel

We flew with low cost airline and they were great, we took the buggy to the gate and straight on the plane the didn't weigh it or anything, and our is a bulky 3 wheeler. Apparently we could also have taken a travel cot on tio of our normal luggage allowance.
I would advise taking your own stuff rather than hiring stuff, I think I am quite easy going but we hired a travel cot and a car seat and they just weren't right...I guess I am just a neurotic mother but ds was 13 weeks and the car seat didn't support him properly and the travel cot was dirty and used as a playpen and at night all I could think about was the risk of cotdeath due to old mattresses ...neurotic or what!!

Buggies are fine-not part of regular stuff.
I have flown about 40 times with one and always ok.

Prams are not inc in luggage allowance so you are free to take one without worrying about the weight etc..don't forget if you hire one at your destination what about the time you have to spend in the uk airport..? A few hours holding a baby while waiting for a flight is not ideal. Also think of possible delays.

TBH I would look at buying a cheap pram in the uk or if you plan to travel abit buy a pram you will get use out of..

If any help we bought a quinny zapp and find it brill for travel abroard. Also small enough to place in the over head lockers onboard the plane.

shhh, i never even thought about whilst we are in the uk...that would have been a disaster juggling him, luggage and 4year old between me and dh...well thats swung it for me, will defo be taking my pushchair rather than look into hiring one, hopefully will be in one piece when it reaches other end, and viceversa, and if not, it will give me a great excuse to buy another one

..cant believe i never gave it a thought about how i would manage in the airport here without puschair

I am quite an organised person..sometimes too organised but it's never done me any harm so far!! I;m the person who packs 1 month before departure date .

Just to ease your concerns about "pram travelling". We bought a pram that our car seat fitted into esp for our holidays when dd was 6 months old. We wanted this pram so the car seat could be taken with us for use in the taxi (see I am quite organised..!) etc. Anyway we thought the same as you about damage etc..the car seat was checked in with luggaged and placed in a bin bag...hhhhmm we'll be lucky if it sees us at the other end..Again we thought the same when we left the pram on the tarmac...hhhmmmm visiton of the plane running it over.. BUT you know what, both arrived safely and in one piece. We did have a bit of a bit of walk with hand luggage to collect cases but we got the pram and car seat first, pieced it together and at least we weren't standing around with a sweaty baby ..! DH was content as well.

Have faith and as we saw it, if things did go wrong thats what your insurance is for.!!

ADVICE: Take minimum hand luggage as you will have enough to contend with..prams/babies etc. Also we found taking a litle bag with nappies/toys/food/drink on the plane helped and the main airport bag with everything else for dd was placed in the locker. This was when we needed nappy changes/drinks/food/toys we didn't have to disturb anyone around us. HTH. xx

thanks for that shhhh, did you have to include the weight as part of your luggage weight, because when i asked in the travel agents they told me the pushchair would be included as part of the weight allowed, however my sister inlaw also works for travel agents and she told me it isnt...did you have to include it with the amount your allowed to take?

No, I phoned the airline a few weeks before we went as I didn't think before hand. They told me that the pram would be taken along with the car seat at no extra cost and not as part of our allowance.
They advised me I could either check the pram in at the desk or take it to the plane door and ground staff would then take it from us.

We checked the carseat in at checkin and kept the pram to the plane doors and had no problems what so ever. Both arrived at the other end.

The next time we travelled we bought a quinny zapp as dd was now to big for the car seat, we also liked the fact it could be placed in the overhead locker on the plane. We intended to do this BUT at check in we didn't advise the staff so the pram was allocated a luggage tag. When we tried to take it onboard it was pointed out that due to us having the tag we needed to let it be placed into the holdall by ground staff.( Apparently if we had placed it in the locker then figures would show they were 1 piece of luggage down and could have cuased problems ). BUT at least we know for next time..!!! Next time we will just tell staff it's going onboard with us. BTW we liked the idea of not checking the pram in as it meant we had use of the pram as soon as we stepped off the plane. Bliss in a hot country and a toddler to contend with ..!!

Hope you have followed this and are not confussed..!!!??

shhhh · 01/10/2006 20:30

btw I am sure that all airlines allow a pram as extra..? Its not like you are taking it abroad becuase you "want to" lol..!! More a case of because you "have to"..!!

BUT you may be best phoning your airline or travel agent.
