Majorca advice - which resorts to consider?

sara11272 · 26/09/2014 19:21

Hi,

I'm looking at Majorca for next year but have never been so any recommendations of nice/not so nice resorts would be much appreciated.

We have three DC, DS 7 and DTDs 6, so we will be looking at an apartment/apart hotel rather than a hotel.

I've found some that look like they'd fit the bill, but am struggling to get a picture of the resorts they're in. We want somewhere that's not in the back of beyond (we usually go to Los Cristianos, tenerife, so that's probably about our preference 'busyness' wise) - bars and restaurants but not party central, don't mind a bit of 'Britishness' but some authentic Spain would be better, don't want wall to wall chippies!

What's Port d'Alcudia like, does anyone know? Or Cala Millor? Or any other recommendations/places to avoid would be v welcome...thank you.

We enjoyed Cala d'Or last year. Stayed at the Ferrera Blanca which is an aparthotel a minute from the beach. Have to admit we spent most of out time in the hotel but there were lots of shops and restaurants within walking distance.

Bunbaker · 29/09/2014 18:26

We stayed in Alcudia many years ago. To be honest I found it a bit Blackpooly. It has a massive beach and lots of accommodation choices. Puerto Pollensa is just along the coast from Alcudia and is much nicer.

Hulababy · 29/09/2014 18:33

We have always stayed in Puerto Pollenca which has been lovely. We have never been peak season though, only ever at Easter or October half term - no idea how busy it might get.

In May half term next year we are going, with DH's family, to Alcudia, though staying at the opposite side of the old town, not in Port d'Alcudia. Though we didn't mind Alcudia itself, off season. The beach and the sea is ideal for children as it is very shallow quite a long way out. It wa pretty quite when we went.

Places like Soller are lovely, but I found a little too isolated to consider staying there, rather than a day trip.

The side to avoid is the opposite end of the island to Alcudia ime - Magaluf, Santa Ponsa, etc. Even off season they were far too "stag do" type places for my liking.

Love, love LOVE Soller. Gogeous little port. Tram to the port and the beach, train into Palma. Very Spanish - feels like a town not a resort, but still has a holiday atmosphere if that makes sense.

LillianGish · 29/09/2014 18:45

Sorry that should say gorgeous little town.

nooddsocksforme · 29/09/2014 19:03

pollensa -the town(as opposed to puerto pollensa) is lovely and it is easy to drive to puerto pollensa and alcudia. some parts of alcudia nice but the rest a bit tacky and touristy and the waterpark is pretty dire. The prices to eat out are more expensive than tenerife

LoveVintage · 29/09/2014 19:10

We went to Club Mac in Alcudia last October. All inclusive with pools etc. In theory my idea of holiday from shell, but wanted something with plenty for dses to do. They were 12 and 13 at the time. Was surprised how much I enjoyed it. The food was fantastic. We didn't venture too far. There waS a bus to the beach just a few minutes away, which was nice but was quite busy. There is also a water park just beside the hotel which the boys loved. I would go back there.

sara11272 · 29/09/2014 19:25

Oh thank you for all the answers - last time I looked there were none and now there are loads!

This is all really helpful, thank you. I'm starting to think Pollensa might be more up our street (sorry to be dim, but what's the difference between Oort de Pollensa and Pollensa - are they different parts of the same resort or distinct towns? Is one nicer than the other?)

Although LoveVintage, your experience of Alcudia is also encouraging, I've found a nice looking apartments there and as we seem to be v limited for choice (surely plenty of people have three children, why is it so hard to find accommodation big enough?!) it looks quite tempting.

Thanks again, any other views v welcome!

We wnt to Cala Egos this year (very close to Cala d'or) and loved it so much we have already booked for next year. The hotel had a bit of entertainment during the day and evening but nothing too energetic or exciting, food was amazing and it led directly onto the beach, as well as having three pools and play areas. It wasn't too big or too small and my three dc loved it.
Hotel is called Marina Corfu but the Marina skorpios is linked to it and is identical inside

Only1scoop · 29/09/2014 19:36

Peurto Pollensa or Cala San Vincente some beautiful rental properties around there.

Only1scoop · 29/09/2014 19:38

Arenal is quite nice. It caters mainly for Germans.

weebarra · 29/09/2014 19:49

Pollenca is slightly inland and is about 7 miles from Puerto. Both are lovely!

Dinosaursdontgrowontrees · 29/09/2014 19:52

We went to puerto pallenca last year it was lovely.
Puerto pallenca is coastal pallenca is inland slightly

AliceMum09 · 29/09/2014 20:02

If you are wanting to stay on the coast (in Puerto Pollensa as opposed to Pollensa town) you'll struggle to find any hotels/apartment complexes that will accommodate a family of five. You'd have to be looking at private apartments.

TheFairyCaravan · 29/09/2014 20:02

We always go to Cala D'Or, it is beautiful.

The Cala D'Or Playa Appts would be ideal for your DC's ages, but you'd probably need 2 rooms. We know people who rate Club Marthas at Cala Egos. That is meant to be really good for young families.

NeatFreak · 30/09/2014 12:12

Just thought I'd add that the hotel we stayed in did have rooms that accommodated five (3 dc and us) so it is possible

sara11272 · 30/09/2014 18:05

Thank you all, and thanks for the hotel recommendation NeatFreak, will take a look.

We've only ever stayed in villas and apartments but found there to be a good choice.
The one Ive booked for May is big - there's 9 of us going - but on the coast and looks fantastic

WeLoveHaribo · 02/10/2014 11:38

Cala Egos is lovely. Going back there for return trip, Club Marthas too!

SantasLittleMonkeyButler · 02/10/2014 11:45

We have only been to Majorca once, and stayed in C'an Picafort. Most of the tourists about seemed to be German rather than British or Spanish but not overbearingly IYSWIM.

We stayed in a hotel a 20 minute stroll away from the resort centre and passed lots of bars & restaurants along the way - some authentic Spanish and some selling what, presumably, the owners thought the tourists wanted. Didn't spot any British pubs or McDonalds Grin.

It was lovely, we would go again but are trying Turkey next year. Hope it's as nice Smile.

sara11272 · 02/10/2014 18:44

Thank you, Hula, Haribo and MonkeyButler (who also wins my favourite username of the day) - will investigate all options!
